If this board is dead, does that mean Fresno radio is dead?

Sorta dead here.

FYI, KKDJ's Dean Opperman posted some good clips from the Breakfast Club days... Links are from FB.

Where's Aunt Penny when you need her?

I am alive, but, everyone else must be dead. Not much to talk about, I guess. Nothing new, or exciting, just the same old boring stuff. Radio to me, it just going downhill, especially in Fresno. Whether it is talk or music, it's all one in the same to me. Good formats are being replaced with bad ones and more and more commercials to go with it.

There not enough choices in formats in Fresno, too many kopy kat stations, with the lose of Oldies KABX we now have 5 AC stations KJWL, KSOF, KALZ, KABX, and KWYE that play a majority the same songs, Maroon 5, Katy Perry, etc. etc. etc. and CC has 2 of them, how original!!!, then theres 3 Rap/Hip Hop stations (KBOS, .KHTN and KSEQ. 4 Country Stations KKSS, KHGE, KUBB and KJUG, 3 Classic R&B stations KMGV, KFBT, and KOKO, 4 talk stations ,3 sports stations, and 2 Classic Rock Stations and don't get me started on the bizillion Spanish language stations.

So many missing formats, Adult Album Alternative, Active Rock (KFRR should have taken it when KRZR was terminated, Oldies/Classic Hits, Smooth Jazz, Traditional AOR, a JACK style Adult hits format, Nostalgia Standards, Retro 80s format that includes New wave.

I have checked them out, Dean Opperman is a FB friend, and there's also a Dean and Don Breakfast club page, brings back great memories, Bobby Valore, Chub Feely and his Ford Fairlane, Valley Guy, The Chat N' Chew lunch hour and many more.

I don't know your market. I'm from all the way across the continent but the title of the thread got my attention.

You guys are having the same conversation I see taking place in market after market after market. Yes, part of it is the fact that radio unlike years ago no longer has "un-plowed fields" to venture into. It seems like radio is stale... but part of that is US. We live in the generation of "spoiled people". We are like developing drug addicts who no longer get a thrill from the beginner drugs so we want something new and more spectacular. "Bring me something better!!!" I need to feed my habit and I need more spectacular stuff.

I've been watching Ken Burns program about the era of Prohibition. (I herded it onto the DVR so I could watch it at my pace.) So I bring you this mental picture... using a topic on which I am not an expert: Here is my theory. Listening to radio does not parallel using drugs. You can't move on to the more exotic, the more spectacular. (Some one who wants to argue against my point could say: buying an mp3 player where you get to choose the music is like moving on to better drugs. Whatever.)

Listening to radio and enjoying radio may be a bit more like drinking beer. If your grandfather drank Budweiser, and you dad drank Budweiser and now you drink Budweiser, is what you experience that much different than what your grandfather experienced? NOBODY wants to listen to what their grandfather used to turn on the radio for! But why not? If we expect the same experience from a Budweiser, or a Coke, or a lemonade, why do we think radio has to turn summersaults and do tricks it didn't do for your grandfather?

Now. A lot of people who drank beer in their youth eventually move on to become wine fanatics, or to expect a Scotch every night. But it could be the wine their grandfather drank, it could be the Scotch their grandfather drank.

Maybe radio is like sex. Do you expect a thrill from sex that your grandfather never experienced? But from radio.... you do.

Happy searching.

I think the "K" in K97.5 should stand for "KRAP 97.5" Or just change their call-letters altogether! Ha Ha. ;D

Anyone look at the last book for KMJ? The FM KMJ? Is right-wing talk the next format to sink? Why is Country popular again? Why is John Lee Walker back on KYNO? Why is Y101 still new, Oh, they dropped that FINALLY didn't they after how many years?

Why...why...why...

Agree on the missing formats. There are other people in the entire valley that are being neglected while the suits in LA/NY who own all of radio never look at the people. They never try to get to know the market. I may be in that prized 25-45 male demo, but I am not some former gang member who listens to rap incesantly or a kid with a skateboard or was a skater in high school. I also am not a farmworker who speaks no english, so I think the radio band is completely oversaturated here and in many markets with spanish language formats. I grew up on oldies, since that is what my parents listened to, and now with KABX gone, I have no station to listen to. Well, I guess radio is dead! *End rant, jumping off soapbox*

Not all Hispanics are farmworkers. Some are bank managers or business owners or doctors or lawyers. Not just in Fresno, but all over the US.

And Fresno has 42 commercial stations licensed in the radio market, plus 18 non-coms. 12 are in Spanish, although 49% of the population is Hispanic, and at least two-thirds are Spanish dominant or bilingual. Maybe there should be more of those pesky Spanish language stations.

The real point, though, is that formats will attract further entrants until it's no longer more profitable to do so than to do something else. And formats that are not profitable, like the previously mentioned smooth jazz and standards options, won't be broadcast.

Why couldn't KABX's new format be put on one of the two Spanish stations that is owned by Mapleton? 98.7 Radio Lobo and 106.3. BOTH SPANISH. Why? ???
Why did greatest hits 97.5 get the ax? Or should I say the knife? ;D

Both 98.7 & 106.3 are in Spanish but are they playing the same Spanish Music? There is so many different variety of Spanish Music. There is "Regional Mexican" which is the most common spanish format but there also is "Spanish AC" & "Spanish Pop" and much much more.

Lobo is Regional Mexican, a predominantly 18-34 format, while 106.3 is Adult Hits / Oldies, a 35+ format. The two formats are complimentary. Since that market is 52% Hispanic, the full spectrum approach makes a lot of sense.

I just saw the Summer ratings and 105.9 has a 0.7, probably a all time low for that frequency from when they went on the air in December 1979, it would be nice to see the return of KKDJ, The Edge, or JACK, but no, it will eventually be a total simulcast of the AM, with the exception of Chris Daniel's late afternoon show which is what keeping the FM alive.

The BLAZE is in the top 10 now with a 3.2 finally being the FOX that had a 2.6, Jen Lipp's show is kicking ass.

I never said KMJ-FM is successful, especially with a 0.7 rating, like I said before they should bring back JACK-FM or KKDJ.
