If video killed the radio star...

I remember having fun listening to CBS FM back in the days before Jack, and listening to The Big Show, or Rocky Allen for my morning gab....

But the music selections on these stations are so dull these days, and with 5 or 6 stations all playing the same crap, with very few variety in between, what's the point of tuning in? Give me XM any day of the week. Why are stations so afraid to shake things up a bit? I mean, here's a free idea for someone... How about 'WVAR: The Variety station'.... Two hours of Classical and talk in the morning, two hours of country, four hours of Rock, four hours of Disco, four hours of oldies, four hours of Movie Soundtracks, hell, even four hours of the more popular broadway tunes....all on one station. That's where I think free radio should be going these days in order to keep up with the variety on Satellite.

That's too much like college radio. I don't think listeners can keep up with a format that changes several times a day.....but I always thought a "Daily" format would be catchy. Hard rock one day, alternative another, classic on a third, new wave on a fourth, etc etc. We have 7 days. Have a fixed format for each day (with a deep playlist).
It would have by attention for a couple of the days each week anyway.

what killed the radio station?
in order to keep this am/fm generic, here goes:
1. technology. it made radio and it will take it away.
2. music. current growth is in talk.
3. FCC. can't broadcast that.

Even easier, sat radio. You can listen to 122 "daily" formats, all at the press of the button. You don't even have to wait till tomorrow to hear another choice. Sat IS truly HD radio. Terrestrial can't compare to the variety.

I still say the dereg movement of the 90's has made radio what it is today.

Dereg begat conglomerations.
Conglomerations begat the mainstreaming.
The mainstreaming begat the homogenization.
The homogenization begat the ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
The HD trviality kept the ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz, even amplifying them.

I'd say the thing that is killing radio today, despite the voice-tracking of numerous stations by the same jock because they are owned by the same company...

Apple making iPods without a radio!

Have to agree about the multi-format idea. Too much like college radio. Problem is, broadcast radio just can't keep up with satellite in terms of music and selection. Radio has taken hits over the years and never goes away, I don't think we'll ever say goodbye to FM radio. However, what will it look like in 10 years? 20 years? My thoughts are basically... the same. Satellite is great, but can you get it in a car wash? Cloudy day? Underpasses? Garage? And if you live in a major market, there is a lot of variety. I think they're both going to end up living separate from themselves, but none of them failing per se.

However AM evolved to talk, etc when FM took over music. Will FM do the same? I don't think so. FM is crystal clear quality with great presence, satellite so far sounds like a terrible bitrate download over the internet. But if satellite can clear up the sound issue, and somehow come up with a system for when folks are driving under things (maybe a relative of the old anti-skip 40 sec. memory of the discmans?). I know they have rewind and what not, but maybe a wi-fi that kicks in when the signal gets covered up? However if we got that, then we're looking at internet radio in the car, which opens up a WHOLE new door.

Some markets are better then others like my hometwon of louisville ky is just awful radio yuk well we do have a decent triple a wfpk and a decent chr/pop station but no liberal talk at all and no commercail alt station but i love los angeles radio but what they need is a good chr/pop station like kiss 102.7 use to be kiss is awful now playing a bunch of crap. They went way to rhythmic for my taste 4 years ago.

In nyc radio use to be better much better.WXRK use to be worth listening to now it is awful and the station at 101.9 they really need to go alt/indie and get something good going like indie 1031 in los angeles but geared toward nyc not los angeles but back to the point of the thread it is sad in market after market what has become of radio:( Thanks deregulation:(
