If WKLU is sold...

Since WKLU is a stand-alone station, if it's ever to be sold will it probably be to a big corporate entity such as Clear Channel or Entercom? They would then use it to duplicate the format of a competitor to siphon off some of a competitors numbers? Emmis used to do that with 93.1 FM.

Let's say they do sell it to Clear Channel and they aim for B105.7.

Emmis, in this case, has a distinct advantage because it is a class B FM station. If a listener can get the same music on a perfect signal or a so-so signal, one seems to have an obvious advantage, no?

Retro 93.1 and Gold 104.5 were both full-market signals, so competition was fairly even. But "The Real Thing™" still had a larger audience (12+ anyway)

Do you mean Retro 93.9, now The Song? If so, that is only a Class A signal.

Yes, I do.

Well, case in point then. ;D

I see a sell more to a company not already in Indy. Like Connsauer Media, etc. It would get there leg in the door with a signal that hits a great deal of Indy.

Format? Swedish Polka ;D

This sale is only speculative.

If WKLU were ever sold, it would be based on their success in the format. They are a top 5 station 25-54, why would another company blow that up just so that they could be a spoiler?

No one is going to buy it for the format. They want it for the signal and coverage in market 40. If it weren't for the previous owners not wanting to sell, this station would have been picked up by one of the big players a long time ago at a bargain basement price.

Not sure if you are aware of this, but Jeffrey Warshaw who is the CEO of Conneseur <or however you spell it> is the nephew of Marvin Kossoffsky who is the sole owner of Continental. <WSYW, WEDJ> Marvin lives in L.A. and has little to do with the daily operation of the stations. Jeffrey is relied on to do the interviews for GM and other key people so it is quite possible that Conneseur could buy up WSYW & WEDJ and then turn it's sights on something like WKLU.

Love 98 (WXIR), the Plainfield licensed station, was purchased by ABC because it reaches Indianapolis, not because it had been successful with a contemporary Christian music format from 1980 to 2003. A station's format prior to being sold has nothing to do with the sale.

As long as Russ's enormous ego is involved, no one will buy them...not at the multiples he's demanding. There's no way to make the financials work at the rumored pricing, so Indy can rest easy that their "big-time station with the high-school sound" will be around for at least a little longer. Kinda hard to believe they ever picked up the numbers they did, but it looks like that is starting to shake itself out as people realize how cheesy they sound and they slowly drop back down to reality.

There is no "them"; it's a single station. The price the previous family-owner got for the station was WAY more than it was worth then & is worth now. To get 3 or 4 million for it today is more realistic and will still be difficult.

Ann Tenna....Steppenwolf...it's easy to see why you guys work for the corporate guys. Neither of you seem to understand much about radio or how it works. The last sale in Indy was to Entercom. WZPL, WNTR and the AM went for $76,000,000. The ratings on WZPL and WNTR ADDED TOGETHER do not equal the ratings of WKLU. Stations are bought and sold based on a multiple of their cash flow, not a signal that can be changed to be a "spoiler" against competition. The cash flow of WKLU will determine its value, in the event that Russ wants to sell. You guys give yourselves away as either amateurs or jealous, I'm not sure which. And again, instead of celebrating stations that stand up to the corporate guys by only playing 6 spots an hour, you denegrate them. You act like kids.

You give yourself away as the one who knows nothing about radio with a statement like that.

Hey, I AM a kid, I'm only 19.  Now if you take  a moment to pull your head out of the clouds and use those 3rd grade reading skills, you can see I was making the point that the multiples of cash flow (of which WKLU has very little) don't make it feasible to pay what is being asked by the current owner's ego.

Additionally, I have no interest in celebrating them nor denegrating them.  I'm not going to be buying them myself, they don't affect my day to day life, and I have no reason to be jealous.  As a listener, I can say their music selection is questionable at best, and their has-been airstaff is small-market sounding at best.  As you say, none of this has anything to do with their sale price, but since you seem so wound-up over it, I thought I'd just fan the flames a little - just to p*** you off.
