If WXRK Goes Away...

I made reference to this in the NYC room, but if indeed WXRK flips as many are assuming once Howard leaves, perhaps to 92.3 Free FM...what does that mean to alt/rock listeners (even if K-Rock is a shell of its former self)...

WXRK never gets noticed much in the NYC ratings, but it's always high in the Nassau/Suffolk ratings...so might some station fill the void if it goes away....would WBAB move toa new rock direction and let Q-104.3 and RCN pick up the classic rock listners....would Island 94.3 (I know the signal sucks) flip formats to pick up the stranded listeners...

I know it' argued that NYC is without oldies (the format is aging) or country (a format that is middle/rural America anyways)...but for the entire area to be without a new rock/alternative station would be a tougher pill to swallow than either of those...

Agreed. But as a fan of new rock and some classic stuff, I still find it nearly impossible to listen to the current K-Rock. Way too much of the same played out rock songs, only instead of limiting themselves to newer stuff, they add tired classic rock songs to the mix as well. Just an absolutely boring mess of a station. Its days are numbered.

But someone has to pick up the new rock mantle and do it the right way, that's for sure. CBS/Infinity should even consider launching one again, given the disappointment of Jack up to this point. Or maybe, if its ratings don't improve, it may be a good option for CD 101.9 / New York Chill / WQCD or whatever it's known as now.

Here's the question: What do you think would be a good spot for a Modern Rock station in either NYC or Long Island? Island 94.3 (WMJC) would also be a good option - I don't see its Hot AC format going anywhere against the stronger, more powerful competition. The heritage WBAB isn't likely to evolve (though we once said the same thing of WCBS and WNEW), and it seems unlikely that any of the myriad Adult Contemporary outlets will change since they all seem to perform well.
