If you could program KIKK-AM/Stern H-town ratings

Time for a little armchair qb action...if you could program KIKK-AM in the mornings (or all day) what would you do?

I think the Free FM format could work. What do they have to lose? Can anyone who sees arbitron tell us if CNN 650 actually gets listeners?

Also, does Stern do well demo wise?

"KIKKin Da Bluzzzz" There is not much you can do with it. Use the Scott system computer and load it up with the blues. It cannot upgrade. It is what it is, a 250 watt daytimer. Voice track it and let it run. Hey, I'm not a fan of voicetracking, but you can't do much with it. We all know that. As a former "KIKKer," circa 1975, one has to be realistic. The signal can't penetrate buildings or get under overpasses. VT it with the blues.

What an interesting concept! But would Blues be as good a sales match with the Wave as say a "Real Jazz" station? Scratchy old Miles Davis and John Coltrane recordings would sound ok on AM. Personally, if wishes were horses, I'd love to have KILT-AM. I'd take that suckah right back to 1975-1980 complete with jocks, newspeople and jingles. And who could ever forget that fabulous KILT processing. I might even have to add "Cue Burns" to the front of each song. I mean it's the perfect sounding station for Oldies. Most of that music was recorded to be played on a Mono AM radio station. Here's my "Dream Team":

Mornings: Stevens and Pruett (harkening back to their H&H days) Jim Carolla does news, and Joanie Green does traffic AM and PM.
Middays: Johnny Goyen
Afternoons: Barry Kaye with John Downey on news.
Nights: Captain Jack (Rick, ya wanna come out of retirement?)
Overnights: Since it's VTed anyway - Me (and of course my young intern Donna)

Musically, we play hits from no later than 1968 to around the early 80s. We'd smoke, we'd be tight, we'd be fun to listen to , and we'd win. All I need is financial backing. I'd think around $50M for the station and another 5 or 10M in operating capitol to get us started oughta be about right. Any takers? Serious offers only, please. Thanks and thanks for shopping at Colonel St. James.

Not a bad idea, given the transmitter location. I've also thought that 1480 would be a good signal for Blues. Not holding my breath on either.

Adding some sort of night service through a frequency move/upgrade would be the biggest engineering coup ever on the Houston AM dial. Impossible? No, but so complicated/expensive no one in their right mind would ever try it, unless the FCC protection rules are radically changed at some point in the future.

As a daytimer, though, I don't see why they couldn't at least get a boost to 500w or 1kw, perhaps going directional with nulls towards DFW and New Orleans. Probably the potential ROI isn't worth it.

My favorite station every time I went to New Orleans was WODT 1280. Where else could you hear "Take Your Drunken Ass Home" at 3:30 AM?

They blew it up and it's now sports/talk (okay, now it's running the United Radio feed, but I digress). Now if WWOZ can just rebuild...<P ID="signature">______________

Damn, don't I fit in there, someplace?

I'm not saying impossible, but certainly, highly improbable. WSM 650 will fight tooth and nail. Orginally KIKK had a pre-sunrise authority. WSM's attornies got that taken away from them around 1970 or so. It forced them to be sunrise to sunset. When I was there, a sign touted the following:

"Sign-on one minute late. Sign-off one minute early."

They wanted no problems.

Directional? No. Money is the reason why. It would not be cost effective. Now, consider this: ever since it was KRCT 650 Baytown, all of it's owners had researched the many different ways to make it happen. The answer, again, not cost effective.

KIKKin da bluezzz all day, baby. In fact, let me VT it.

Well I COULD use a seasoned professional producer for S&P. But remember it's VTed so all these talents would be on 7 days a week. That doesn't leave much room. And Chuck, as much as I like you, you ain't replacing my young intern Donna.

Who was Captain Jack? (KILT, not the guy that was at KMJQ)

You should have heard the short lived Blues 780 in Jackson, MS. It had a good 5000 watt signal but some hideously boomy distorted audio but some of the best old school blues around. None of this southern soul type stuff that isn't really blues. They played all old school blues and old race records from the 40's on up. Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, BB King, Lightnin Hopkins etc. All the way up to Stevie Ray Vaughn The owners never really supported it and it had few commercials but it was fun while it lasted. Its now all Mexican.

My, my, my, how the clock has ticked away. "Captain Jack," Rick Candea, was the night cat in the mid to late 1970s on KILT 610 when it was Top 40. Eventually, Rick would become PD, taking KILT-FM to the number one position as a country station, which knocked KIKK-FM off the top. He also was the last PD in this town, who enjoyed double digit ratings.

No, definately NOT the same person.

Why not a format simular to KHYI, "The Range" in Dallas?
It's not going to happen in Houston on FM...
