If you couldn't work in radio, what would you do?

Having finally left the business after a long and successful run, I decided to try several different venues including syndication, retail management and insurance. I found that I was successful in all of these and it really didn't matter what I did for a living as long as I enjoyed the work. Maybe that's the secret to getting out...don't worry, be happy. (Apologies to B. McFerrin)

What would you do?

I left full time after 15 years and have been in IT (my second love) since. I still do VO and some radio.

I agree, as long as you enjoy what you do, you'll be fine. I think we forget (probably thanks to all those managers who reminded us we were at the bottom of the station food chain) that we have unique skills that are very marketable in the outside world. We know how to speak and write clearly, present ourselves, sell, promote, we're not afraid to stand up in front of a crowd, we've learned how to listen, we have been exposed to many types of people across many parts of America, understand our culture, we understand team play and producing results, etc. The list is pretty long.

I believe I lived the best of both worlds. Did 10 years full time and 10 more after that part-time. Hung up my headphones a few years back for good. During my part-time stint, I eased into working for AV manufacturers where I'm at today in a sales director role. I tell everyone that I traded in my microphone for a good paycheck. Will never regret being a jock...it made who I am today.

Exactly what I'm doing now: Full time freelance voice work from home. Well, okay, plus a weekend stint at a radio station, not for the money (ha!) but for the sheer enjoyment of it.

Interestingly, just this week I declined an offer of a $70k job because - even though I'm making less at home - I'd rather be here voicing e-learning, commercials, promos, and so on. It's a great life!
