IF YOU HAD TO PICK ONE OR THE OTHER...L.A. RADIO OR BAY AREA RADIO...AND WHY?

Re: IF YOU HAD TO PICK ONE OR THE OTHER...L.A. RADIO OR BAY AREA RADIO...AND WHY

Both pretty dull at this point, but I'd say LA overall has a higher level of professionalism. Historically, LA has had more innovative stations that started trends: KPPC, KMET, KHJ, KNAC, KROQ, the Wave perhaps...

Right now, best of LA would be Indie, and the best of SF would be KFOG's 10@10.

Re: IF YOU HAD TO PICK ONE OR THE OTHER...L.A. RADIO OR BAY AREA RADIO...AND WHY

Don't do that. Don't pick just one. At least not permanently. Why limit yourself?

Both markets fluctuate. Many times when there's was a really winning team
at one station, it ignited the entire market competitively. Cluster radio's a
little different, but can still produce quite great sounding stations.

I've heard both L.A. and San Francisco sound brilliant, but I've also watched
big ratings successes suddenly stagnate those same performers --"Don't change
anything, we're number one; if it ain't broke..."

And I've certainly heard radio in Fresno, Sac, Monterey and up and down Int-99
that occasionally puts both larger metros to shame.

That said, L.A. is a vast, industrial entertainment town full of possibilities; San
Francisco is an impossibly fog shrouded infinite fantasy.

LA by far is much better. SF is horrible. They don't even have a CHR-Pop station. What kind of radio market is that seriously? LA has KIIS yes, it does lean rhythmic, but it's a rhytmic-leaning-CHR. That's what counts. Plus LA has got the celebrities and what not. SF it's just idk SF nothing really special about it.

Re: IF YOU HAD TO PICK ONE OR THE OTHER...L.A. RADIO OR BAY AREA RADIO...AND WHY

I feel it really depends on what your looking for.

NPR....San Francisco... Although, KPCC does a great job.

Oldies....Right now, I think it's KRTH.

News....KCBS Los Angeles

News Talk...KGO... All live and local without all of the predictably conservative hosts.

CHR....KIIS hands down...

AC....KOIT

Okay....So I'm a Norcal Native, but I can adapt.

:)

Re: IF YOU HAD TO PICK ONE OR THE OTHER...L.A. RADIO OR BAY AREA RADIO...AND WHY

If you look at the variety and the overall choice of stations, it's hard not to make the case for the Bay Area.

Top 40- KIIS vs WILD 949.....If you listen, they both sound basically the same..WILD just doesn't position itself as a Top 40....yet!

AC- KOST vs KOIT....Essentially the same

Alt- KROQ vs LIVE105 & STAR987 vs ALICE.....Essentially the same

R & B/Old School- HOT 923 VS 981KISS-FM...Essentially the same

Rock/Classic Rock- KLOS vs KSAN...Essentially the same, but KSAN sounds better and more variety

Hot AC- MY1043 vs STAR 1013...Essentially the same

Smooth Jazz- THE WAVE vs KKSF...Essentially the same

AAA- THE SOUND vs KFOG...Essentially the same, but The Sound has a long way to go to compare fairly with KFOG

Oldies/Classic Hits...KRTH vs KFRC...Essentially the same, but KRTH does sound way better

Country...KKGO vs THE WOLF...Essentially the same

Hip Hop...POWER106 vs KMEL...Essentially the same. And radio folk know that KMEL pioneered this format

Old School Pop/R & B/Top 40...MOVIN 939 vs MOVIN997...Essentially the same, but L.A.'s version about to become extinct

But here's where L.A. falls short:

KBLX...A great R & B/Smooth Jams outlet that just keeps getting better...Only thing in L.A. that comes close is KJLH, but signal is limited.
KDFC..A great Classical station
ENERGY 927...A great dance station

Then you've got all the South Bay signals that cover most of the Bay Area proper....KEZR(Hot AC), KBAY(AC), KOME(Classic Rock), CHANNEL1049(Alt/80's/90's), KRTY(Country)

So for sheer variety and number of good/very good stations to choose from.....Hard to beat SF/Bay Area?

KCBS-740 is in San Francisco. KNX-1070 is in LA....

I can't believe I blew that one....eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!

One thing for sure, KNX has improved in the last year.

"I can't believe I blew that one....eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek! One thing for sure, KNX has improved in the last year."

You're forgiven, MRK. It is confusing. We Bay Area natives never should have let LA steal the KCBS call letters for their lame TV and FM stations...only about a quarter century after they stole KNBC. And LA has better beach weather. It's just SO unfair...
