What would you do to turn the 4th place network around?

Make Kathleen Parker the new anchor of the nightly newscast. Then, I'd ignore Ed Schultz as much as possible, so he can "torch the f***ing place." ::)

Too much low budget reality stuff and not enough high quality scripted entertainment. Fix that and the network's ratings will grow.

Fire Zucker.

Oh wait, they already did...or at least he won't be around after Kabletown takes over.
I'm sure he's getting some lovely parting gifts, though. ::)

Buy the rights to the entire "CSI" empire.

Wow! Really, IMO, that franchise has run its course, and will soon start on a downhill slide - much as the Law & Order franchise has done.

Double wow! CBS dumped Medium for a reason

The road back to success for NBC is not in taking tired and worn shows from other networks, but developing compelling original new projects. A few years ago, ABC realized that they needed to do this - after a few uncreative years of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire four times a week and multiple weekly repeats of According to Jim. They've been doing better ever since.

CBS picked up Medium for a reason too.
Did NBC even know they'd get 7.1 million viewers if they kept the show instead of handing it over to CBS?
We're talking 7.1 million viewers. NOT the 3.65 million the Whole Truth brought in for ABC.

There's some room there to give Medium some full solid and strong credit where credit is long over due.

I believe The Sing Off has been doing well for them. Unfortunately, the reality/game shows seem to be doing better for the peacock than the scripted series and cost less to produce.

I wouldn't be surprised if they go more in a reality direction- for now, at least.

Sorry - I wasn't implying that NBC picking up Medium was necessarily a bad idea. Maybe yes, maybe no. I had actually never seen an episode of the show until recently, and I don't think it's bad.

But given that the title of this thread is "If you ran NBC...", I was a little disappointed reading posts about existing shows with a lot of mileage on them - like Medium and CSI, rather than some exciting new ideas...not that I have any... ;D

I'm also trying to encourage the return of more game shows on NBC, but then again, ABC has had their share of "original" gameshows, and everything from DUAL to Show me the Money have all been a disaster, so I don't know what to think now...

NBC needs a short-term and long-term plan. Short-term they need to get back on the map, and I agree, reality and game shows could get them there rather quickly. Beyond that, they need to compete long-term with quality dramas, good sitcoms, and a strong replacement for Leno eventually. We'll see what Comcast can come up with. Doing nothing won't work. I'd expect 2011 to be a very interesting year for NBC.

CBS also owned the Medium series, another reason why.

Just as if it came from any other studio, yes they paid for it.

...so NBC was paying for the rights? ???

I know it seems odd, but just because a particular network produce a program doesn't mean they necessarily carry it on their network. I spent a week in Mexico last summer - their Fox network satellite and cable network runs only Fox produced programming - and many of these shows appear in the US on other networks. Two and a Half Men is one of these shows. At the moment, I can't think of any others.

But the point is - a network will often produce a show, and sell it to another network.

"If I ran the zoo, I'd make a few changes. Yes, that's what I'd do."

Get whoever whoever runs scripted drama at USA (Characters Welcome) to be head of programming for the broadcast network.

Cancel the Nightly News. Instead put Dateline on five nights a week for one hour starting at 7:30.

Move the news division out of Manhattan and put it some place more in touch with the real world (Charlotte again, maybe). News employees have it in their contracts that they can not read the New York Times.

Do bulletins on the network and tell people to go to MSNBC for extended coverage. Same for presidential speeches and news conferences.

Get rid of Morning Joe at MSNBC. Do whatever it takes to get Stephanie Miller. Stop pretending talk show hosts are the same as news reporters.

Look for new people with new ideas. Take a chance on fresh ideas. Don't keep going back to the same performers, writers and producers who had hits before. Do something new and different. Try these shows out on Bravo and move whatever clicks to NBC.

Bring back Law & Order but with new writers and producers.

All dramas shot on location where the show is set. Get directors who can get it done cheaply and know what "realism" means.
