If you run AT 40...have you noticed...

It sounds like A S S!!!Back in the day, those guys took so much pride in the sound of the show, but these days...overexposed Seacrest isdn's his tracks and it sounds like a low end webstream when he talks.

It's just frustrating to hear a national show sound worse than a local vt'd station.

Don't we all...and I can't even get AT40. The little I've heard in other places makes me glad I can't get it.
______________

I get AT40 on both WKSC and WXSS and AT20 with Casey AC version on WLIT and Hot AC version on WKTI. AT40 is just ugh now. I used to wake up at 6AM just to listen to it when Casey was on. WXSS didn't start running AT40 until Ryan Seacrest took over. Isn't he awesome? (sarcasm)

We got screwed out of Rick Dees though when CC dumped him on their stations.
______________

KRQQ/Tucson is owned by ClearChannel but still has Rick Dees yet it is in the inconvience of 9-12 pm on Sunday nights.

As for AT40, it started right at the start of 2004...first time I heard it I threw in a CD.

> We got screwed out of Rick Dees though when CC dumped him on

WOW - That last database dump was brutal. It destroyed some pretty good message posts on here from the past couple of days. I was wondering what happened there, but I figured it out.

I was also wondering what happened to Rick Dees. Y-100.7 (a Clear Channel station aqui en Miami) suddenly dumped Rick Dees from Saturday mornings awhile back with no notice whatsoever. I blamed Y-100.7 at the time. I should've blamed Clear Channel. Was there any reasoning behind this madness ?

Rick Dees is a radio legend. His "Weekly Top 40" is legendary all around the world - except for on most Clear Channel stations.

Enjoy AT 10 and AT 20 while it lasts. After Casey is gone, you'll never hear that kind of show again.
I actually liked Ryan when they had the old jingles and such and he filled in for Casey. Then, they changed all the imaging, and it sounds nothing like it use to.
As for Dees,
Primeer did not renew his contract with him I believe. Primeer = CC inhouse opperation. Not on Primeer? Probably not gona be on CC.
Wheeling WV's Kiss has Dees Saturday mornings still. I think most major market CC stationsdropped him after he left KIIS.

Dees vs. Seacrest

I think it's funny that everyone rips Seacrest...I have listened top both his KIIS Morning show and AT40 and his content is good...his mornig show is very good, actually. I liked Dees (note: PAST tense)...but he still sounds like he is doing early 90's "Morning Zoo" bits and that doesn't relate to the CHR listener anymore. Don't get me wrong...I have a ton of respect for the man (Casey too), but I completely understand evolution too.

Think about it...50 million viewers tune to American Idol every week...a lot of the 18 - 34 female demo flips on E! (where Capt. Botox is on too)...if you programmed a CHR to target YOURSELF, you'd probably go with Dees...if you programmed a CHR to win with the demo, who would you go with??

You're so right. I'm particularly jealous of Ryan Seacrest. He's doing every dream job I've ever had in my life. He's literally replaced Casey Kasem, Rick Dees, (soon-to-be) Dick Clark on the "New Year's Rockin' Eve", and he even fills-in occasionally for another legend Larry King on CNN. He's got the # 1 (and # 2) TV show in the nation. The list goes on and on. He does everything !

On the other hand ... Rick Dees is a radio legend. He is the inventor of the "Morning Zoo" concept. If he had a daily or weekly show somewhere on XM Satellite Radio I would be there for him. He's my "American Idol" !

Maybe I'm getting carried away here. Maybe NOT !

I was lucky and as soon as Casey left AT40, a station around me picked up AT20 HAC. I used to listen to AT40 religiously, but now it's AT20.

HONEST TRUTH WHY DEES GETS SMALL MARKETS AND SEACREST GETS BIG MARKETS

Seacrest has a teen related show. He interviews tons of artists, plays other sample bits, and really does a lot to target the 18-34 or even 12+ demo.

Dees pretty much just plays the countdown & he's pretty similar to Casey, IMO (though Casey is far above him). Dees tries also to pull out the 18-34 demo.

Most of today's small markets are varied.

Most of today's medium markets stick to the charts.

Most of today's large markets are rhythmic leaning.

Seacrest is a host of American Idol as well.

The larger markets dropped Dees for Seacrest for one reason, he's more popular. Not countdown wise, but media-wise. TV Shows, Music, Movies, he's done a lot. Dees hasn't really done much outside of radio and countdowns.

So, how does Dees fit in small and medium markets?

Because it's a straight-forward countdown, just like they are straight-forward CHRs. People in the 18-34 demos in those markets want a straight-forward countdown with no biggies.

That's a good post!!!

I really don't follow countdown charts anymore. I sure did when I was a teen-ager, writing down the charts every week, something to fill time.

Today, I listen to countdowns for information bits because of my job I need to keep up with the CHR format as I entertain teens on a regular basis. It seems to me that Dees has more information that I find useful. Although it's not a perfect show, it's very well done. Seacrest talks too much about himself, what he likes & thinks. I have never been a fan of opinion radio shows.

A lot of Seacrest's bits seem to Dees inspired (not Casey) from Candid Phone, sound effects, talking to his staff, AT40 sleaze & artist interviews. His air personality just doesn't fit me.

I heard about two years ago that Seacrest has a bodyguard with him at all times, even at the radio station. I wonder what the other jocks think about this.

I'm surprised that Dees hasn't done much TV & movies since the 80's & 90's. He was on several TV shows & movies during those decades. I guess, radio is his first love. I can't say the something for Seacrest. He appears to be a TV guy first & radio second.

Who is winning the overseas battle Dees or Seacrest?

That's a pretty good assessment of the differences between "AT-40" and Rick Dees' "Weekly Top 40". Well done !

Speaking for myself "AT-40" is unlistenable to me. It was 'must-hear-radio' for me back during the classic '70s and '80s Casey Kasem years. Shadoe Stevens destroyed it during the late-1980s, but then there was "Casey's Top 40" to listen to instead.

I've always liked Rick Dees - his style, his comedy, his countdown, etc. Some may say that he's antiquated, over-the-hill, irrelevant, etc. I don't feel that way at all about him, but I'm almost 39 years old. I guess I'm in his target demographic - 'aging CHR-POP fanatic'. I would love to see him sign a contract with XM Satellite Radio. I think he would thrive there.

I couldn't have said it better myself. "Into The Night" was a painful experience for Rick. He put blood, sweat, and tears into that show only to see it self-destruct against Johnny Carson and Arsenio Hall.

> Who is winning the overseas battle Dees or Seacrest?

Based on the feedback from my fans that I receive on a regular basis from all around the world it appears to me that Rick Dees and his "Weekly Top 40" is the far-more popular countdown show of the two. It makes sense to me. Dees' humour is universal. It's easily translated (understandable) in most countries, cultures, and languages. Everyone understands hilarious sound effects !

According to Rick Dees' web site his "Weekly Top 40" is heard in 70 countries worldwide.

My guess would be Dees overseas because Seacrest's is called AMERICAN top 40....
