If You Seek Amy (Britney Spears)

I'll take that bet. I say it's a stiff. You say it's a hit.

Steak sounds good.

Just a quick update - Video has been released:

http://www.britneyspears.com/2009/03/official-if-u-seek-amy-music-video.php - Typical Britney, although I love the jab at Fox News.

Currently #26 and up over 500 spins on CHR/Pop with 93 of the 132 reporting stations with detected spins... At the time of this posting, yesterday was it's peak date. I think this is strong growth, even with many stations still playing "Circus" in heavy rotation - this will definitely go top 10 and I think it going to #1 is a possibility.

*Says in his Lt. Worf voice* "Yes, today IS a good day for steak."

;)

Still growing from hype. It'll fizzle out. #1 is 11,000 spins. Eff Amy isn't even close to that. I'd be surprised if it hits 5000. A hit if it can sustain 8000 for 3 weeeks. We'll see.

::) Geez not every song has to go to number one! It's a fun record, definitely somewhat of a novelty, but Britney is a core artist, and this song is a perfect fit for CHR radio.

Man, you are going to fight me until the bitter end on this one, aren't you...

A song doesn't have to be #1 to be a hit though... We can go through and find countless songs that never made it to #1 that still get more plays today than songs that did go to #1... Now I'm not saying that Amy will be a gold record we're all jammin' years from now, but it's still gonna be a hit - yes a short lived hit, but still a hit.. A hit is a hit!

Deal with it! :p We'll see, yes. This is fun.

It's a hit if it makes it to GOLD. It's just a number until then. You're right about not having to hit #1 to be a hit. "Tainted Love" anyone?? "Toxic" by britney is a hit. It still gets spins on CHR today. That's probably her only hit song. Jury is still out on the current crop of singles. If it works for a station the play it. But it's a 'hit' in name only, not by definition.

I like my steak medium rare. Baked potato, tomato wedges and a nice dinner roll.

I guess we have a different definition of the word hit. There are numerous examples of songs that charted high on Billboard or R&R, ie making the Top 5, but aren't played as Gold today. "Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears was a huge hit. How many CHRs play it today? What about "The Macarena"?
One example of forgotten songs is a lot of songs played on Jack FM stations. Until Jack FM came along many of those were forgotten songs or one hit wonders.

When KTU came back in 96 it played a lot of Disco records that weren't played on the NYC airwaves for a long time (though PLJ did used to host a Saturday night Disco show in the 90s).

I think songs like Macarena and Barbie girl is what made people think Dance-Techno is lame..

Anyone remember a song from like 85-87,,, an Italio dance song from Taffy-I love my radio (my Midnight Radio)... It was a great Jam, but why dont any dance or Rhythmic ACs play it today??????????

Charles - you gonna go in on the steak with Will? You have my order.

I never even thought as the macarena as a dance song. As a matter of fact, I never even thought of it as anything.. but I would say that most people would think of the macarena as probably a spanish song or some type of foreign song, not primarily a dance song. A lot of people, as soon as they hear a different language to a beat, all that clicks in their mind is "spanish" or whatever else it is, unless of course they also don't know the language it's in.

Barbie Girl I'd say helped to mess things up, but that alone probably wasn't enough of a heavyweight to REALLY destroy an entire genre for a while. Dance was doing ok up to around 4 years or so after Barbie Girl was released....

ok this stupid case on Judge Judy made me lose my train of thought. I have somewhere else go post something now that I cannot say here....

Sorry, Mikeo... I tend to agree with CHRles here on this one, he's sited some perfect examples. Your definition of "Hit" doesn't seem to jive with the majority of programmers I've ever worked with.

(FYI - It's up to #22 with a gain of over 900 spins from last week) I'll happily let this thread die, but I guess we'll just have to stalemate then, and no steaks will be served - we'll never see eye to eye on it.. And that's ok. (I'm not eating red meat for awhile anyway, so I'll let this one slide!)

Let it rock!

IFSA is a hit as much as Gwen's "What You Waiting For" was a hit. When was the last time you heard that on a major radio station? Perhaps we need to redefine what Hit means. It has evolved into a more of a "NOW" mindset. Big now, gone tomorrow. Britney has appeal with her fan base and mainstream chr searching for non urban songs. Pop is back in and lucky for Britney - she's gone from a sad former pop star to 'somebody' again. But like a painful kidney stone - this too shall pass.

How many songs actually have staying power these days? Songs do not have the shelf life like they used to in my opinion because of the technology that has been developed. You have almost every song at your finger tips these day instead of having to wait for a record shop getting a new record. Would Elvis be Elvis if he came out today? The young demographic has this whats hot now and forgets what was hot mentality. I see this every day at the college. So in my opinion the term hit has to change as well.

Looks like I owe somebody a steak dinner. That'll teach me to think radio listeners have a brain. I should have known better. AC baby!

I called the shots on "Amy" and "Poker Face" when everyone here was declaring them both to be non starters......SO Fabulous!!

I like this song and I'm not afraid to admit it. I knew I was going to really like it ever since the beginning, no matter how much I tried to deny it, and now it's apparent that I'm not alone when it comes to liking it. The song was very well put together and arranged rhythmically and the vocals really complete the song. I don't care what the subject or the topic of the song is about, I just like the sound.

Same with Daft Punk's "around the world". Sounded good, and didn't care too much about what the song was talking about.

I am rather glad that this Britney song made it as far as it did. I never once thought though that this song would make it, and I must say if it didn't, I probably wouldn't have payed any more attention to it. It's easier to deny something when everyone and everything else is straying away from it too, but the opposite happened with this song. If it continuously comes on, of course I am going to listen and get more into it if I enjoy the sound.
