Why not discuss the TV partners of Cleveland radio stations?

WTAM, WMJI, and WMVX are partnered with WKYC-TV, Channel 3 news/weather. Their forecasters do the weather on radio (conversely, WTAM's Pat Butler does helicopter traffic on WKYC's morning show).

The CBS Radio stations (Q104, NCX, et al) are prominently split between 19 Action News and NewsChannel 5. Obviously, CBS gets their traffic from Metro.

I noticed promos on WEWS-TV for news and weather feeds on WZAK - from where else - NewsChannel 5.

FOX 8 doesn't seem to be in bed with anyone in Cleveland radio. That's a shame.

WEEeeeeeeellll... Actually... Fox 8's Pat Brady works closely with Metro Traffic too.

So does 5 and 19... Linda Dawson does her traffic from Metro, same with Ric.

As far as other stations in Cleveland, ALL of them get their info from Metro except the Clear Channel stations. Now, CC in ashtabula still uses metro, and alot of smaller market stations do to, as in WEOL, The Wave, and K96 in sandusky.

that's my take

It Got Them Back in the Air, And TV Partnerships in General

This wasn't talked about much when it first happened, but it's a win-win deal for both parties.

Shortly after dumping long-time "Skychief" helicopter traffic reporter Rick Abell, the station lost the bird's eye view altogether when it cut the contract with Metro Networks, removing both the bird and the voice of Abell replacement Terry Groden (who happens to be Metro's operations guy locally).

When Pat Butler took over the drive-time traffic reports, he was first in studio on Oak Tree...and still is for afternoon drive. But by "catching a ride" on the WKYC helicopter, which is already up there providing live shots for their "Today in Cleveland" news show, Butler now provides airborne AMD reports for his employer, WTAM. It makes sense.

(For those who don't know, Clear Channel as a company has been grounding aircraft in many markets around the country. Either they lose them by ending agreements with Metro and going on their own, or they ground their own copters and planes. In this case, CC isn't paying for the bird, so they can keep airborne reports.)

As far as the Channel 3/radio involvement goes, Channel 3's weatherfolk are also heard on CC Akron/Canton's three stations, WKDD/98.1, WHLO/640 and WARF/1350. And there's an odd thing with news in the market... WKYC and its cable newscast for Akron/Canton refer to "our news partners" at WAKR/1590, but it sounds like competitor WNIR/100.1 also has a deal to be able to use WKYC news audio with attribution.

It would help if Channel 3 actually put the ol' whirlybird up in the sky more often. It's rarely airborne. Listen for the "Helicopter traffic" tags. They don't come very often.

At least some of this, no doubt, is due to weather conditions. All of the local birds are grounded a lot for this reason.
