iHeart Boston Layoff?

Today on RKO instead of being the 2nd Boston station playing Limbaugh, they have some guy Vinnie-something who claims that he's "filling in" all this week. Left unsaid is what he's filling in for. https://wrko.iheart.com/ still claims that Limbaugh is on.

Apparently it's Vinnie Penn:

Hey #Boston! You ready? 12-3 ALL WEEK. Today’s guests:
@Cernovich

@WRKO680
#iHeartRadio #TalkRadio

Meanwhile, Rush is still on hiatus.

is rush even on the air this week? he had several fill-ins last week. Maybe RKO figures a local fill in is better than a fill in for rush.

Vinnie is on iHR's Conn. stations. On RKO all week.Trying to spread him or his show..?
Will be on that slot all week.

When Kuhner got a 1 yr extension of his contract from iHR he speculated they could maybe syndicate his show. What are the chances beyond slim,
fat, or none?
Entercom didn't...

Penn:
"I am the host of the weekday morning talk radio show The Vinnie Penn Project in Connecticut (960/WELI) "--amazon.com

What show our new pal Vinnie is "filling in" for AFAIK has not been specified.

Seems to be a common problem around the iHeart stations. They fired the overnight host at WLW, and they've been running fill-ins for two weeks. Meanwhile the website has the dearly-departed's picture still posted.

An interview with Dick Morris is probably a big deal in New Haven. Not so much in Boston.

Penn's been on New Haven radio forever. Never thought I'd see the day his show would be sent to another market, let alone a major one like Boston.

With internet streaming, how important is syndication these days?

K00nah seems to get a lot of callers from around the country, despite not being syndicated. People listen to him on the stream.

I would think at that point its more about marketing, to get people aware of your program to get them to tune in or listen to a podcast of the show.

For a syndicated show, the syndicator does the streaming. And most of the revenue comes from OTA radio, not stream sales.

A local show that gets out of market traffic is prime for syndication.

It depends. Legally speaking, the STATION does the streaming. They're the ones liable for any royalties, even for syndicated shows.

It helps that iHeart owns the station and the streaming platform. Same with Entercom. But not so for all other owners.

Agreed. The station pays the royalties, always. But the syndicator is in charge of the stream. Many syndicated shows are not streamed by the station itself while others are streamed by the station but through the syndicator for the commercials.

How would the syndicators do that if they don't own a streaming platform? Listeners hear the show from the station's website, not the syndicator.

Go to United Stations, Compass, Sun Broadcast Group, or Westwood One, and you won't see any streaming links on their site. They assign streaming rights to the local station.

If the program has a originating station, people could stream it from that one station....the point that the OP was making is that we might not need a web of 100 stations for people to hear it anymore.

Also, the syndication could offer streaming.

Not saying I agree, just fleshing out the OP's point.

I understand, and clearly that's what's happening with Kuhner, since he's not syndicated. The problem now with streaming is it's hard to get sales metrics. If someone is listening to Kuhner in Denver, it won't show up in that city's Nielsen ratings because WRKO isn't in Denver. Even if it did, a handful of listeners won't show up in a book that measures millions. So while it's technically possible for listeners to do all kinds of things because of the internet, it doesn't lead to data that anyone can sell. If one syndicates a show, then it gets encoded for that city's local ratings book, and results in sellable numbers. Hopefully.

Streaming metrics are completely different. Both iHeart and Entercom are signing up outside owners to build up their usage numbers. WRKO is streamed on iHeart, so if someone listens in Denver, they'll hear a Boston show, but with Denver commercials. That's almost as though it was being played on a local Denver radio station, but using a different platform.

Howie Carr tweet:
>>Major announcement today at 3:00 on the Howie Carr Show. Tune in then.

Claiming VB off the waiver wire?
But who knows.
VB's twitter account today did confirm that he was laid off by iHR and he thanked them/WRKO for the chance to do a show, thanked his listeners etc
