Iheart has debuted Real Rock 105.7

iHeartMedia Greensboro announced today the debut of the new REAL ROCK 105.7, effective immediately.

REAL ROCK 105.7 will broadcast the top Rock songs from legendary artists including Led Zeppelin, Green Day, Queen, Foo Fighters, Nirvana and more. Plus, the station will also feature three hours of uninterrupted music each weekday afternoon at 4:20 p.m. presented by Greensboro’s market veteran on-air personality Matt Pencola.

“We’re excited to launch REAL ROCK 105.7 and broadcast esteemed music from the greats like, Queen, Nirvana and AC/DC as well as the biggest artists of the 21st century like The Foo Fighters, Breaking Benjamin and more,” said JT Bosch, Program Director for REAL ROCK 105.7.

The station has used - and continues to use - a centrally developed, hot pile of garbage playlist that is used on many of iHM's small & medium market rock stations. No music from the past 15 years is played. Playlist generally alternates between a classic rock song (70s / 80s) and a classic active/alt song (90s or early 00s).

It's an absolute trainwreck of a playlist. As soon as 105.7 adopted the current music formula, ratings cratered.

Prior to the current approach, the playlist used to more closely align with that of a typical active rock station (albeit not exactly), and ratings were MUCH better!

Indeed, WIOT uses the same playlist in many dayparts. I believe 95.1 WZZO in Pennsylvania uses exactly the same playlist as 105.7 in all dayparts. 100.3 WHEB in Portsmouth, NH is another such station.

Leave it to a bunch of clueless terrestrial radio execs to think the NAME was the biggest issue with this station (I will admit, the former name was stupid). The PLAYLIST far & away is the biggest issue with the station. So sad, because 105.7 when it first flipped to Rock sounded halfway decent.

What's the difference between mainstream rock and active rock
Mainstream is going to give more of a focus to 80s/90s with some 70s and 00’s mixed in. Active will play some of the legendary harder rock hits of the 70s 80s 90s to a certain extent but will also debut newer harder rock. Some active stations play more or less pre 00’s while others may mix in more or less alternative. I’ve seen mainstream referred to as “Heritage Rock”. Very hit base.

Don't you mean pre-90s? I don't think you can have active rock without 90s grunge.
