iHeart Orlando to take over AM 810 WRSO

On 9/1/18, iHeart Orlando will begin supplying the programming for AM 810 WRSO with an option to purchase the station. (BTW.. someone should nudge WRSO and remind them to put the same document in their PIF as well.)

https://publicfiles.fcc.gov/am-profile/wflf (click the icon with the three dots on it... then click Time Brokerage Agreements)

Now let the tongue wagging begin as to what programming they're gonna place on the station... plus it's translators!

From the information I have gathered, I heard their lease for the 102.5 translator with Central Florida Educational Foundation has expired, and it is not being renewed.

Therefore they are leasing 810 with its 2 translators to do the following:

W226BT 93.1 will rebroadcast WFLF 540AM to replace the loss of 102.5.

WRSO 810 and W253CE 97.9 will launch around Labor Day with Spanish News/Talk as "Accion 810/97.9". I guess they will rely heavily on the 810 signal since 97.9 is a Kissimmee translator, and has a null to the north to protect first-adjacent 98.1 WNUE. However, the Accion 97.9 logo doesn't even show 810, which makes no sense to me.

Regarding 93.1 with WFLF, the 102.5 translator was a great signal, and 93.1 has a massive null to the north to protect W227CP 93.3 in North Orlando. Unless they are leasing or purchasing 93.3, anything north of Winter Park will be difficult to listen on FM.

Curious to know what the WPOZ folks are going to do with their translator. One thought would be leasing it out to cox for WDBO-AM in which case it would be called ESPN 102.5 and forget that 580 exists with the exception of the 100 MPH legal ID of the call letters only. Another thing would be for them to put their rock station which is on 88.3's HD4 on there which would be nice. Can't get the 103.7 translator out of Clermont here.

Lesson #1 when using a translator for your AM station. If you don't actually OWN the translator, avoid calling yourself only by the translator's dial position.

If iHeart was only leasing 102.5, how did WFLF go so far as to call itself "Newsradio 102.5"? Yes, I know fewer people are listening to AM radio these days. But if you've got a 50,000 watt AM station and you only have a short term lease on the translator rebroadcasting your station, it's nutty not to use the AM's dial position as well as the FM's. Central Florida residents who want to hear Rush, Beck, Hannity, etc. are not fleeing AM radio as they might with a rock format or top 40 format. You can call the station "Newsradio 540 AM and 102.5 FM."

And even a good translator still only has a limited coverage area. The Orlando market stretches across much of Central Florida. 250 watt W273CA only covers a fraction of it. I'm sure a lot of folks who like the Premiere line up of conservative talk hosts have figured out that when they are out of the translator's reach, they can hear it on AM 540. Maybe more than half of its audience is listening to the AM station.

(I won't get into why a radio station that has a news staff of one calls itself "Newsradio." Are they fooling anyone into thinking its a news station? Is "Talkradio" such a bad term?)

Couldn't agree more. I wonder if and when they are going to tell their listeners about the change. If memory serves me correctly I don't recall them saying anything when they moved from the translator on 104.5 (which they own) to 102.5. WFLF calls their listeners the smartest audience in talk radio. I guess they think the listeners know automatically where to go when they can't pick up the 250 watt front porch. Wish I knew someone who listens to 102.5. I would ask them if they knew where else they could listen besides the translator.

Remember my post is based on information I have gathered from different sources.

However, everything points to this change.

Let's see what happens next week.

Yes I would love 103.7 The Rock on 102.5. I miss hearing that on FM. Listen from tunein from time to time. Going to miss hearing the Gators on FM though. But if they do indeed move to 93.1 you can forget it in Altamonte. Winter Park north is about acurat for 93.1. I have to bust out the CC EP if I want any hope of hearing it in Altamonte and even then WKRO blasts in a good amount.

Already heard them saying 93.1 WFLA today. Confirmed 93.1 is now the WFLF symalcast. Can barely hear it here in Altamonte on the EP. Also 810 is playing Spanish music. WFLF is still on 102.5.

WFLF is now on 93.1, as well as 102.5. Don't know how long they will keep it there though. Actually heard a promo mentioning their move to the left (of the radio dial that is). And it actually mentioned AM 540.

I thought iheart owned 102.5 for some reason. The main reason I listen to WFLA is the gators games. Will be listening on 540 or tunein for gators games. 93.1 is too much trouble for me to keep playing with my EP everytime I want to hear it. And I'm a hardcore DXer. LOL

Heard ESPN deportes last night on 810. Have not checked 810 yet today but did check 102.5 and it's still the WFLF symalcast. Is it bad that this is some what entertaining to me? LOL

810 should be Spanish News/Talk Accion 97.9

Hello. 810 is indeed Spanish news/talk now. I confirmed it earlier tonight. If someone else does not beat me to it, I'll keep you all posted on 102.5. Last scan at about 1:30 AM on Sept 5 has 102.5 as WFLF symalcast still. I think it will take a few days for the changes to happen to 102.5. Because we all know that 102.5 will have a new format. I really do hope for the the rock on FM again.

I heard Bud Hedinger this morning reading a promo about WFLF. He said as of October 1 they'll only be on 93.1. But to my surprise he also mentioned that you could also listen to them on I heart radio, AM 540 and 107.7 HD3.

Iheart radio needs another radio station like we all need a hole in our heads. This station will amount to a hill o beans.. aka nothing

Damn I miss true oldies on 810 AM. :( I also miss the old wLBE but WVLG is still good for AM music. But it's kinda cool hearing country on 790 WLBE AM.

It was posted on another board that WPOZ is going to have another brand extension.

I do not have access as to what it is unfortunately (even checked WPOZ's website and social media, no mention of it), but I would guess whatever it is, it will on 102.5 this coming Monday.

After further speculation, if WPOZ is not bringing their rock station to 102.5 the only other Christian music formats I could think of would be either Christian CHR or Southern Gospel. If it's not music they're after then it would have to be a pay for play teaching format similar to WTLN.
Not to change the frequency subject, I had always wanted WPOZ to put their rock format on 88.7 WMYZ because there is so much overlap from 88.3. It looks like however they have different plans for 88.7. There's a construction permit to move WMYZ from Clermont to The Villages and use WVLG's tower. This would also free up their translator on 102.7 out there.

They are putting a major push on this station, hiring good talk hosts from Puerto Rico. With Orlando likely to hit 40% Hispanic this year, there is a real market for the station and format... just look at WRUM
