iHeart Radio

The commercials are on the stations themselves. There are no "Pre-Roll" ads like Live365 has

My wife and I listen to this a lot. My question is: how does it make money when it has no commercials?

iHeart is funded by Clear Channel communications 'deep' coffers.. It's an extension to their AM/FM/Web brand.. They also have the ability to push ads both during the local breaks and web based ads in the iHeart player itself which can fund it.

You're absolutely correct.

I wonder how close they are to breaking even or making money.

I'm pretty sure they aren't making money with it right now but I do in fact see a video ad once every time I start the app.

Knowing the popularity of it -- and the impressions they get with those videos reaching masses.. they are making something.... a definite yes to making money... but getting rich off it? not yet.

I like radio apps, including iHeartRadio, but just because they have revenue doesn't mean they have profits. There are heavy costs too. I expect they'll get there. The new emphasis on talk makes sense given music royalty costs. Just last year Hogan said: "It's not a business, it's a feature".
