Podcasts are usually recorded from a pre-delay feed that is before processing. There are different forms of software that can do it, but it’s built into most of the bigger automation systems such as Zetta. The first hour of your morning show would show up in the system a minute later. If you were podcasting your morning show or afternoon sports show, you used to have to edit the commercials out. It came in handy for paid programming or when sales wanted an air check of something. Today the segments are automatically made when a commercial block starts.
You’d plug all of your satellite feeds into it as well, that way you could play back a weekend show, the news, sports, or business report on your schedule and not theirs. The newer satellite receivers have eliminated most of that need, they store the shows and play them back whenever you want.
There used to be a system called “digi-logger” that was specifically for your off air feed.
