iHeartRadio Overnight

Hi Guys,

What's the deal with blacking out certain stations overnight on iHeartRadio? For example, I was listening to MyFM from LA and it just cut off and went onto an Elvis Duran replay...yet the now playing info is still being sourced from MyFM.

I thought there was a dedicated replay channel for Elvis? Not great for people working overnight listening online...

Clear Channel started doing this a year or two ago. They're trying to cut down on royalties since they play little-to-no music when they air Elvis in the overnights. Plus, Elvis isn't carried in LA, and airing his program on KBIG's stream exposes his channel to people in LA.

I've been told they have a few national music channels they substitute for over-the-air stations in some formats, too. Not sure what the logic in that is since songs cost the same per listener regardless of format. I suppose it's easier to sell national ads to an audience if it covers the whole country, but ad insertion technology enables you to air ads to specific listeners rather than all the listeners to an entire format.

Thanks Kent,

I'm kinda surprised they don't just air it on KIIS, at least he would fit in better on that station's stream...

Clear Channel still do the same with commercials too don't they? As in black them out on all streams...

I'm not sure what KIIS is airing these days, but it seems like I read Clear Channel had toyed with airing Seacrest replays on its stream in the overnights. Not sure if it ever happened. KIIS isn't really my cup-of-tea, and I'm in bed well before midnight Pacific Time. I'm usually in bed around 11:00 Central since I get up at 6:30 during the week.

As for streaming commercials, union contracts prohibit the streaming of commercials outside the local market. In the past, Clear Channel used to cover all union spots regardless of location. Since they own Katz, they can find enough national advertisers to make a small profit off of streaming.
