Ike Newkirk on WQXI Sunday mornings

Anyone else love this show? No commercials, no screener, just people calling and letting it rip. Newkirk is like listening to your grandpa, but I mean that only in the best possible way. Downside: it's 5-8 a..m.

The guy is very funny to listen to. The best part is hearing how much misinformation he spews in 5 minutes.
They must have no issue with his Art Bell view of the world.
If you want entertainment, without any substance at all, he is your guy!

Yeah, he's definitely leftist, but I wouldn't say he's constantly spewing misinformation. He's actually pretty level-headed for a liberal. I just love his unique style. He talks so slow that I'm convinced he's stuck on a word but the word comes on time almost without fail, and it's usually a good one. His callers are interesting to hear too, not your typical mainstream talk demo at all. Newkirk should replace Herman Cain gets if you ask me.

The few times I've heard Newkirk over the years I've found him entertaining, but honestly, who listens to radio from 5-8 a.m. on Sunday mornings? Who's even AWAKE then?!

Honestly I only catch it if I wake up and can't get back to sleep after a night of drinking. But it's a good show nevertheless.

I wouldn't go as far as to say he spews misinformation, but I don't find him as objective as he makes himself out to be. My problem with Ike is that when a caller disagrees with him, he keeps the caller from making his point. He pots the caller down or tries to turn what the caller is saying into something that it's not.

You are right, Roddy, and I'm an unabashed leftist. I actually find this to be a trend among left-leaning talk show hosts. The right-leaning hosts will at least let disagreeing callers say their piece.

He seems to get a little bitchy sometimes with anyone who disagrees with him. I often don't agree with him, but it doesn't bug me much. The fun part of his show is hearing the callers. Some are regulars who sound like complete idiots.

Oh you'd be surprised! A lot of people tune in to WSB AM at 7:00. I'm sure they're not on this board though. ;)

He has this professorial, condescending way of speaking that is ironic when his opinion is absurd, and that's relatively often. Still love to listen though.

I think temporary hit it on the head.
He still is very entertaining, but his analysis is many times X Files made up garbage.
He continues as do many of his callers to say how the 2000 and 2004 elections were stolen and that there were various conspiracies to do it.
Last check there were three independent vote counts made of the 2000 hanging chads in Florida and every one of them has Bush the winner over Gore. Period.
He claims that they used rigged voting machines in Ohio in 2004 and the the Republicans were secretly calling blacks and telling them that the polls were closed. No documentation or fact to back up this idiotic talk.
Very funny but very ridiculous too.

I believe that Ike Newkirk has the longest running radio show on Atlanta radio. I believe that him and his show has been in this same time slot on WQXI-AM 790 since 1968!!!!!!! Many owners, management, d.j.`s, formats have come and gone but Ike still goes strong. I remember how funny he was in 1999 talking about how Y2k was going to cripple the world on 1/1/2000!!!!!!!!!! He goes on and on and on........very funny stuff! I have always wondered if Ike Newkirk is is last time. Some one told me years ago that he took "Ike" from Eisenhower and "Newkirk" from a character that was was very popular at the time on the CBS-TV show "Hogan`s Hereo`s". Is this true? If so, what is his real name? ::) :D ;D :)

Ike Newkirk is his real name. He took over the show in 1976 from Mark Van Brooks. Other Open-Line hosts have been Bill Conover, Harlan Parks, Guy Sharpe (yes THE Guy Sharpe), and Bob Mann. The original Open-Line line show ran on WQXI each weekday evening from 11:00PM til Midnight from at least 1961, and was moved to Sunday mornings around 1965.
It is the longest running call-in talk show in Atlanta radio history.

His most recent quirk was supporting Hillary over Obama. I haven't listened in a while, so I don't know if Obama is his horse now or not.
