I'll tell you what's "not cool"........

commercial radio stations running promos begging their listeners to support them financially, as if they were a non-profit.....

Because they annually rate at the bottom of the Cape Cod radio market and because they do zero marketing to build cume (and thus, cant sell local advertising because the average Cape Cod radio advertiser has never heard of the station), WMVY, on martha's vineyard, is pleading with its listeners to become a "friend of mvyradio" by donating money to help support their streaming and programming on terrestrial radio.

I'm not making it up.

this from their website - "The Friends of mvyradio is a non-profit (501c(3)) company created to help mvyradio offset streaming and programming expenses by enabling our listeners to make tax deductible donations to support mvyradio."

I've lost all respect for them. And I'm certainly not their friend.

Now I understand that evenutally they will be completely listener supported and non-commercial, but this is pretty tacky to do while you are still selling spots locally as a commercial station would.

you'd think, being on the vineyard, they'd do quite well as a member supported station. why have they waited so long to do it?

Being a huge fan of the station, listening when I can in the car & streaming at home, I have mixed emotions. I'd hate to see an end to their streaming & the website says it cost them $500K in 2006, but I still don't think I'd donate. I probably wouldn't even if they were completely listener-supported either simply because it isn't something I would do, but I'd guess they do have some passionate listeners that would. If you check the page with donors, one is as far away as London, England. How much of this $500K can they really expect to offset though.

Commercial radio stations soliciting thier listeners (on-air or otherwise) is not entirely unheard of.

In the Boston market, there is the example of Bob Bittner, owner, and sole employee / operator of WJIB 740 am. In response to the huge increase in music rights fees that his station would have to pay, which would in essence, put the unique "Beautiful Music" format off the air, Mr. Bittner made a concerted effort to directly appeal to his listeners for contributions.

In the case of WJIB, they sell very little in the way of advertisements, and only a limited amount of brokered religious programming on the weekend.

In the case of WJIB, it was massively successful, largely because the demos that the "BM" format caters to would be disenfranchised were WJIB to leave the air. These were people who felt passionate enough about what they want to listen to, that they voted with thier pocketbooks.

In the case of WMVY, I don't feel any sympathy for them..... "MVY Radio" has always struck me as a bit of an elitist "non-comm wanna-be".

The Newport simulcast is actually owned by an individual, he re-transmits whatever he pleases. Until a few years back, he had a simulcast of 95.9 WCRI in South County, then changed his mind and changed it to WMVY.
