Illegal Power Alien Returns?

I don't freak out, I understand it was tried, signal sucked, owners gave it a valiant effort and we don't have a dance station. I totally get the financials of the biz and that it would not be a viable option. I often though wonder, if the signal was better and then hung around for another few years to be able to partake in the dance heavy product we have had, if they would really still be history.

Which station?

Short answer--most at 5:45, one at 6:00 :eek:, and the jury's still out at the Lumberyard. :D
 
Tuesday, February 1:

The KayFuNNsters powered up at 6:59:41 AM, though it should have been 7:15.
Same naughty M.O. as in December and January. :eek:

All you "Moe Money" fans can rest easy however, as the entire 5-6 PM show can
now (legally) be heard on day power/pattern, with power down being 6:15 PM;
tonight's actual was 6:14:40.
 
KayFuNNsters can now legally get more night power! Just have to apply for it when the FCC allows.

Don't have to protect KGA as a Class A anymore.

They & 1510 in Piedmont, CA have been granted their new night power/patterns.
KGA is mearly another lowly Class B running a whopping 15 KW & almost covers Spokane with 5 mV/m.

When I was at KRUX in 1976, we got a 3" reel of audio tape from Sweden, with a few seconds of KRUX on it, as recorded in Sweden. It sounded like the KRUX signal was coming from the moon, but it was definitely KRUX.
 
Hey KRUXMAN: What would the power have been for KRUX in '76? I remember them back in the mid-50's on 1340 when their 250 watts were heavily modulated and had to wonder what the FCC did about that. Can't rmember when they moved to 1360 but think that was 1 gallon.

PS: Do you remember newsman Joe Patrick? ???

In the '76 Yearbook (thanks, Old Gringo!) KRUX ran 5 kw-D, 500 w-N, DA-N.
By the '82 book, 1360 was 5 kw-D, 1 kw-N, DA-N.

Currently, KPXQ 1360 runs 50 kw-D, 1 kw-N, DA-N. Almost non-existant in
the 'Tuke at night.
 
Oldiesfan is correct, 5KW day, 500 W night. With KRUX being on the west side of town, our nightime signal was beamed to the east.

I heard the name, Joe Patrick, but never met him. Our News Director at the time, was Gerald Ackley, and the other news guy was Bill Rose.

According to the 1958 Vane Jones guide, KRUX was 5 kW days and 500 watts nights on 1360. I think they moved from 1340 sometime in 1957. The '57 Broadcasting Yearbook shows it on 1340 with 250 watts fulltime, and the '58 book shows it on 1360.

Incidentally, the PD for KRUX according to the '58 book is Lucky Lawrence (that's exactly what is says!). ;D
 
Lucky was at KRUX for many years, including it's haydays in the mid 60's. I didn't know he was at KRUX in the late 50's as well.

Larry Wright was a giant in Arizona radio for many years, indeed. I have the radio enthusiast portion of my life thanks in part to his heart felt interest in me.
Lucky Lawrence invited three eighth grade bicyclists out for a cross-town visit back in 1962. He welcomed us and introduced us to Al McCoy and later on to Dick Gray. They gave us a bunch of promotional copies of 45 rpm records that memorable day.

I was informed of a great parallel with Tommy Wright at the KRUX Reunion last year. Lucky gave young Tommy a part time job at the old West Camelback studio. Which hooked him on radio and led to Tommy's radio career. Tommy and I had a great visit that day.

A million thanks to you, Lucky. God blessed us with your great big heart many years ago... :)

I was just surprised that Broadcasting Yearbook didn't use his real name, especially considering he was management as well as talent.
 
I listened to Larry Wright and the "Hot tub" late at night. It seemed that most of their audience was from Arkansas, where they were syndicated on an FM station. Neat show. Their show was produced in the same studios (or next door )as Sam Steiger in east Mesa I think. The Hot Tub show was on KXAM in the wee early morning hours. I liked a segment called "Letters from Home" which were (Make believe) letters from Civil War soldiers.
 
It's still March (6:45 AM-6:30 PM daytime), but over the past week plus I've
noticed the KayFuNNsters being powered up by 6:30 AM and not powering
down until 7:00 PM on several occasions. This morning KFNN was already
powered up at 6:18.

Unless their license states they can be "up early" and "down late" compared
to the normal March times, they're apparently still not playing by the rules.
Is it a PSRA/PSSA? Doubtful, the signal strength is the same as daytime.
As always, Ronnie or any of the KayFuNNsters are welcome to refute this.
 
This morning's (March 29) power up was at 6:14:24 AM.

How does KFNN get away with a half-hour early, and everyone else on AM
waits until the proper 6:45 time? :mad:

Oldiesfan, didn't you know that KFNN gets special authorization to power-up early in the morning and power-down late in the evening?* Also, they have secret permission to not serve their city of license (Mesa) at night.# I mean, they have to have some sort of authorization or permission to do this, because if they didn't, they would be blatantly violating FCC regulations. Nobody would do that now would they? ::)
