but IMO CNN is kicking their ass in the hurricane coverage... even (IMO) MSNBC is kicking FOX News' ass... FOX's coverage is very weak. I do like Sheppard Smith.. but other than that, very impressed with CNN.

What news network in your opinion is doing the best job covering Hurricane Katrina?
______________

None of the Above. I would much rather watch the internet streams from WWL or WDSU before I watch CNN, MSNBC, or Fox News. I did watch CNN over the first couple of days mixed in with the internet streams, but now, I am just watching the internet streams. Far better coverage without Dog and Pony antics.
______________

I'd say CNN has been doing an incredible job about 90% of the time...the rest of the time, they let Miles O'Brien open his mouth.

His attack-dog questioning is appropriate for government officals. They have oversight for the situation and have a duty to the public to respond to the tough accusations being sent their way. But it's not appropriate for, as one example, the miliatry officer who was trying to get an airlift underway. Ask about the operations, ask about the risks, ask about the logistics, but save the flat-out nasty tone and in the "WHEN are you going to start helping this people" questions.

As for Fox News, I watched them this morning, and was thoroughly unimpressed.

I hate Shep Smith, but he has done an excellent job on this story. The rest of the network has been pitiful. Especially government apologist Bill O'Reilly.

Must have been a real blow to O'Reilly's ego when he tried to cut off both Smith and Geraldo and both of them, on camera, basically told him there's more to be said. O'Reilly tried to prevail with words such as, "Actually here's the way it is," and both reporters kept on rolling and bluntly said, "No it isn't that way at all. We're here looking at death and destruction, you are not, and no amount of laying a smoke screen will cover this up." I also am not a big follower of either Rivera or Smith but some things can't be ignored and they at least they had the chutzpah to tell O'Reilly to "wait your turn" and be patient with the rest of the hired help in the studio.

Im not as generous with my compliments due to the ease of reporting this story.
This story as i have posted before is a "low hanging fruit". But there are positive comments to be made and quite a few negative ones as well.

However MSNBC and CNN reporters are digging a little further down when it comes to connecting the viewer with the true pain some of these people are facting. The reporters have no choice, I believe but to be angry, frustrated with what they have seen, and like many americans are in shock as the horror of the event and the lack of federal response/leadership. This, in my opinion, like the Rove gate scandal has temporarily brought out their best journalistic skills and principles. I compliment those who have really connected like Anderson Cooper and Jeanne MeServe and Carl Quintinella (who normally are lickspittles).

The failures have been in the anchor slots. Only Aaron Brown, Miles O'Brien, and Jack Cafferty have been able to connect with what the reporters are sharing. Most of the anchors are still playing "devils advocate" as if there is a real debate as if this was a real disaster. Blitzer, O'Reilly, and Hannity, and Matthews to a lesser degree have been their typical apologists selves.

Fox, with the exception of Shepard Smith, have simply continued to stab Gov. Blanco and Mayor Nagin rather than take the story to its real focus of failure, Chertoff, Brown, and Bush. They have failed to connect the people viewing to the dissaster.

Im also being unfair to Geraldo Rivera, but the opportunist who i loathe, is doing fairly competent work. However, im hoping that he will be taken off air by a small rock or maybe a a punch from a frustrated person. I can't help it but when he's on the air, its like scraping ones fingers on a chalkboard.

I agree Shepard Smith has done a remarkable job reporting from NOLA. Overall, FOX News has been weak. CNN has been fantastic.

If people are critical on how the reporters down there are telling the story (i.e. being too harsh on Bush), I think every single one of us would be if we were down there reporting and see this horror firsthand. Just seeing the pictures on TV this past week (even now), I can't believe this is actually happening right here in the U.S. We usually see pics like that coming from some foreign country.

I can't even begin to imagine what those reporters are actually seeing. Don't surprised if you see Shepard and Anderson and Jeanne Meserve take some "time off" for counseling.

Very possible. Not adhering to the network plan and story line has its price. Smith may be waking up to the fact that Fox doesn't necessarily have all the "right" ideas, and that there ARE other places to work.
