Careful on the ATR-700. Believe most of the models used a piece of Teflon instead of a rear bearing on the capstan motor. After a while, the Teflon would wear out, allowing the shaft of the capstan motor to drag on the rear housing of the motor. As a consequence, the machines would not run on speed.

I see Otari 5050's advertised at very low prices here in the U.S. Same with the ARS-1000 play-back only decks. Would think that would be a much more reliable alternative if you need tape players.

I have owned both. My first 2 track was the ATR-700. It is a sweet deck! The only thing I didn't like, was the Tascam style reel hubs. I had mine replaced with Otari hubs.

I presently own a 5050BII. Guess I oughta pick up some more? ;)

What is this gear for? Are you setting up a museum or an example of a studio from the 60's or 70's?

If I had a dedicated room @ home I would do an example studio to impress my friends ;D . For the moment I'll just check the equpments and give the possible use to them

Oh hell set it all up in the front yard during the holidays, and impress the neighbors and passers-by. Make sure that all the equipment lights work, and make them flash if you can. Also have it playing holiday tune medley's. If someone steals any of it, they should find out real fast how much (errr, rather how little) it's worth. ;)

;D
