I am sorry to report that greed has put radio in Maine on its death bed.

I was on one of Maine's most popular beaches for 5 days and I did not hear a single, not even ONE boombox playing a Maine radio station on the beach!!!!! I can not remember ever running into that before! Even my friend who was up brought her XM converter.

It is sad, Maine used to be a good market in which to work as a stepping stone in the move up to the big time.

Are you SURE that "greed" is the problem? Maybe "poor program content" and the sound of "canned radio" could be the culprits? When XM radio, CD players, and other options are available...do you think vacationers should just ignore those in favor of 'tired blood?'

i remember working for the late andy carey at stereo jbq when it was at 106....and then wigy bath brunswick y106 they had great jingles pd was jack something diamond i believe did a few fill ins. maine radio sure has changed....and of course rocking you from the top of sugarloaf wtos skowhegan

Gotta disagree. I did vacation in Maine last month and heard lots of local radio on the beach, particularly Frank, BLM, Bone and Red, more or less in that order.

I'm not a big country guy, but I heard several radios playing country- would assume it was the local Portland stations.

Not sure what you guys are complaining about. Portland's a good radio market. Great Rock battle going on between BLM and Frank, neither of which sounds "canned" or "cookie cutter." (Always hated that phrase and never really understood it. I've never worked for a station where the corporate mandate was "sound generic." But I digress.)

I remember WJBQ-106.3, and WIGY-105.9, back in the early '80s. JBQ was kind of a Hot AC, at the time, and WIGY was a Top 40/AOR hybrid. I was working at the former WLOB-FM-100.9, "FM 101-Portlands Best Rock", later as WYNZ, "Z-101-Portland's Best Rock", at the time an AOR/Classic Rocker, and then went over to WBLM-107.5, when Z-101, went under. Portland had decent radio, for a market that size, no doubt about that. WTOS was great, during the early-mid '80s, and back in the '60s, WLOB-AM was a great Top 40 rocker, too....
