Furious doesn't even do it. When I was 7 and my next door neighbor was 9. He laughed and made fun of me when I asked him what Santa was going to bring him. I remember it vividly; where we standing on the block, the gray color of the sky that day, the cold breeze blowing, the mischievous sparkle in his eyes, the fall leaves blowing blowing across the sidewalk when I looked down to hide the tears building in my eyes. That was 42 years ago nearly to the day and I remember it as well as I do anything else from my life. My neighbor, that day, stole some of my innocence from me ...a little piece never again to be replaced.
Last week I asked my wife how much longer our nine year old daughter was going to continue to believe in Santa, her reply was this. "She's still trying and still does. She thinks that if she does then Santa is real." Thanks to julie and billy on kmx this morning she may not be able to hold fast to her own belief. My daughter does not listen to kmx but many if not most of the children (NOTE TO julie AND billy, THEY ARE CHILDREN, NOT KIDS, KIDS ARE BABY GOATS) that are dropped off by parents may on their way to school. So my daughter may today get the same ridicule that I received 42 years ago but, her argument against may not be as strong as was mine because so many "heard it on the radio today".
What I heard this morning (yes, I HEARD IT) was julie wanting to begin a topic that included phone calls about (paraphrasing) "have you ever been the one to kinda ruin it for a kid and tell them that there really isn't a Santa?". Whatever thin thread of that innocence that my daughter and many other children may have had in believing in Santa could have been taken from them this morning.
Almost two years ago I stated on this board that I was turning over a new leaf and was going to try and be nice and kind to everyone. I have pretty much, pretty closely, lived up to that New Years resolution. This morning the kmx morning show ....... just like the cold breeze from 42 years ago ........blew that leaf up off of the ground. I'm not sure upon which side it will land. At this moment I am hoping that it lands with the side up that reads, NO QUARTER GIVEN NOR EXPECTED.
