Im giving up on Pulse 87. Too much Repetition

Im giving up on Pulse 87. Too much Repetition. I guess I was expecting the old Hot 97. Instead, I got knocked over the head 13,205 times with Rhianna and Brittney Spears. Even KTU PEW isn't this repetitive.

The old Hot 97 was a Top 40/Rhythmic station that played all the flavors of contemporary NEW YORK DANCE at that time. Top 40 Mainstream, (Dance Pop-Madonna,Regina,EG Daly),New York Freestyle, a little South Florida Freestyle (Voice in Fashion,Sapphire,Nice N Wild) R&B flavored Freestyle (Shannon,Nayobe,Jay Novelle) and R&B House (JM Silk,Malaika,Shawn Christopher).

Since Pulse 87 isn't owned by Cheap Channel or any of those big Payola companies, I would think they would play a wider variety of songs. The station should be able to play the Brittney/Rhianna stuff (Top 40) along with the real New York stuff.

I will still listen to Star and Buc in the morning.

Sorry guys. I tried.

That is what all the american dance stations sound like, energy in sf and arizonia is the same way, I knew people will be like this

This isn't the rest of America. This is New York City. We should be ahead of San Franciso and the rest of the country. It's always been that way.

Maybe this is why nobody is listening to the Energy stations in San Franciso and Arizona (besides having weak signals like Pulse 87).

Hey, if you don't like it, get satellite.

You people are WAY too fickle!

This is a NEW RADIO STATION! It's still attracting new listeners. The way it does this is by playing familiar music. They are still trying to drive cume with NEW LISTENERS. Get it?

Give them a while...they will likely start loosening up...Unless of course, all you fickle people abandon them after a few weeks and they pull the plug!

I think the comments up above are from people who are bitter because "Dancefloor" by Jimi LaLumia didn't get a fair trial at radio in this country....at least that's what I'm always accused of...can't even pick up Pulse out here,anyway...

The songs that Pulse 87 plays the most seem to air every 2.5 hours or so. Honestly that's not bad. Some CHR's will repeat certain songs every hour. Pulse has also added a lot of music to its playlist in the past couple of weeks and seems to be adding some specialty mixes and such, such as one I heard last night at around 10 pm with DJ Yanni.

Beyond that though, Pulse is doing whatever any other new station does....plays the hits as often as possible to build cume.

I think some people are just looking for reasons to dismiss the station. People also need to realize that it's not going to play the really obscure underground tracks either...hence the pop remixes.

We finally have a dance station and people give up on it after a month. Is anyone ever happy? They're a work in progress, their building up cume and adding more music slowly but surely. They've added 2 new djs in the past 2 weeks and they've been on the air....what...a month?
Patience!

You can't please everybody. People whine and complain that there's no dance music on the radio, a dance station finally comes on the air, albeit in an unorthodox way, and people find reasons to complain. Just like people complained about CBS-FM being taken off the air, then complaining about CBS-FM when it returned. If country ever came back to the NYC airwaves, I'm sure the same complaints would follow, from the very same people who advocated for it to return to the air for so long. Just seems to be how it is.

I for one think Pulse is doing everything right so far, considering its limitations. They're adding new music, they're adding well-known jocks and a high-profile morning show at a time when other, larger radio stations are doing the opposite. They managed to squeeze another radio station onto a full NYC dial, even if it is technically a TV station.

Complaining about the repetition is like complaining about radio in general, when in fact Pulse doesn't seem to repeat songs any more than any other hit music station, whether it's pop, hip-hop, rock, etc. As for the signal...well that's just a lame reason to complain about the station, since they seem to have done as much as possible to get the station on the air and sounding good. I'm sure back in the 80's, when little class A WLIR on 92.7 was becoming "world famous," there were many people who had trouble hearing it in NYC, Westchester, NJ, parts of LI, etc., but the true blue listeners supported it however they could. This is a similar situation.

What a load of crap! Cry me a river with your BS.
The most played song at Pulse got 70 spins
http://www.mediabase.com/mmrweb/AllAccess/Stations.asp?c_let=WNYZ-FM

Z-100 played their top song nearly 100 times this week, and they've been doing really well in the ratings
http://www.mediabase.com/mmrweb/AllAccess/Stations.asp?c_let=WHTZ-FM

The top record at Shot 97, another leading contemporary music station in NTC, got 90 spins
http://www.mediabase.com/mmrweb/AllAccess/Stations.asp?c_let=WQHT-FM

Also, judgeing by Pulse's playlist they ARE playing a lot of New York records, a lot of records the other Dance stations havent added yet. Keep in mind this is 2008 NOT 1988 so if you're expecting to hear the same exact type of records the old Hot 97 played you're just living in the past. This station is living in the here and now, and is focused on a new generation of listeners.

As for Energy 92.7 San Francisco, the station's primary target is the large gay population living in the city of San Francisco (they make up a third of the city's population), though they do a decent job of catering to all the clubbers and Dance fans in the Bay area. Their signal is nowhere nearly as strong as stations like Wild 94.9 and KMEL, but guess what - Energy is NUMBER ONE with MALES in the 25-54 demo within the city of San Francisco. We're talking about a lot of rather affluent listeners so the station is considered a success.

CHRless,

I dont expect Pulse to play the same type of songs that were played in 1988. I want Pulse to play the type of songs that New York club goers are listening to today. Playing Rhianna and Brittney is what Pulse has to do, but they should be able to do a little more since they are not owned by one of the big Payola companies. Hot 97 played dance that was played in New York clubs in 1988. Would be nice if Pulse 87 were to play some songs being played in New York clubs in 2008.

What is wrong with a few songs that DJs like Danny Tenaglia, Erik Morillo, Victor Calderone and Dennis Ferrer are playing in the clubs today?

You're talking about world class DJs, but some of them play a sound that might be too deep and underground for terrestrial radio, especially Danny Tenaglia. That guy can take certain 10 min records and make them stand out by playing them at just the right time in a set. He is seen as a god by most of the progressive house and Trance DJs.
As for Morillo, a lot of the records he plays only trickle down to radio months later. He plays a lot of unreleased stuff. He was among the first to play Samim's "Heater" for example. Same deal with guys like Roger Sanchez.
Pulse is playing the new Veronica. They're also playing New York City's own Filo & Peri, whose "Anthem" is a really big record on all the Dance stations in the States. They're the only station playing B&G Project and Dan Balan. For the most part they're trying to play big crossover Dance hits, or records that are already testing well at other Dance stations. The station is trying to build an audience, and with time they'll be able to do an even better job of determining which record to play, and how frequently.
As for you Jersey Dude, sounds like you're a fellow hardcore Dance fan whose into a lot of records before they break big with the mainstream crowds. Check out the following website:
http://www.newmixes.com/

A lot of the world's biggest DJs have weekly/monthly radio shows, and most of them can be found on this website. I'm sure you'll enjoy shows by the likes of Pete Tong, Antoine Clamaran, John Digweed, David Guetta, Dan Marciano, Carl Cox, Tiesto, Ferry Corsten, John Dahlback, The Scumfrog, Benny Benassi, Paul Van Dyk, Armin Van Buuren, Robbie Rivera, Stonebridge, Judge Jules, Oakenfold, Matt Darey, Above & Beyond, Roger Sanchez, Greg Di Mano, Wally Lopez, Martin Solveig, Laurent Garnier, and more ;)

I also think Party 105.3 is better at breaking new tracks. But pulse 87 still sounds pretty darn good. The signal is weak outside the city, but I think the 5 boroughs is their main focus.

Why can't these dance stations play what they play on their mixing? usally the music they play on their mixing is better than the music they play every weekday

I take a break from the craziness on another board, just to refresh my thoughts, and I see THIS thread! I am standing up in applause to Neo11 because HE GOT IT RIGHT!!! I've HEARD the whines first hand..I restart the coalition...we get it back and all I hear are people moaning left and right about this station! I mean...sorry but...WHAT THE BLEEP!!!

It's bad enough the freestyle fans are complaining that they want the SAME SOUNDS FROM 1988 to go back....and when I tell them that if they want to try to get freestyle to come back in 2008, the music has to reinvent itself, they go up in arms.

THIS IS A RADIO STATION! FOR SOMETHING NEW AND CURRENT, THERE WILL BE REPETITION! This is no different than Z-100, Hot 97, Power 105.1, etc. The station has been around for a month now...there's still work to be done but Pulse IS addressing it! Sure, I'd love to hear Danny Tenaglia, Erik Morillo, Victor Calderone, Roger Sanchez, etc. do remixes. And maybe in time they will. Can't dance music fans be HAPPY that something is around...TODAY?

Heck...there's 'KTU and satellite. If you don't like Pulse, enjoy those. Me personally, I am NOT complaining! But if we lose another dance station from all this, I'm just going to find a lake somewhere, take out a fishing pole and chill.....because to that, we would have "done it to ourselves...our own worst enemy".

O.K. We all know that it has been only a couple of weeks since the pulse went on the air!!! Things don't happen overnight. We can only hope & pray that the pulse never goes the route of !Freestyle & Classic Disco!! New York Needs a real dance station, doesn't anybody remember when KTU debuted. They played real dance music, but unfortunately they lost there way, and then refused to grow with the ever changing sound of dance music.

Example: Real dance stations have been around in the U.K., Canada & Overseas for years way before KTU & The Pulse. Maybe they have learn something from them !!!

So we will wait and see before giving up!!!
