I'M MAD AS HELL

Yup...I said HELL and apparently that's one of the reasons Bill O quit WECK...according to the BUFFALO NEWS this morning. Well people keep reading your news because this mornings article will not be the last. And untill then, let me leave you with this. I grew up in a household full of men so my language may be salty. I was in talk-radio in Denver for 3 years...we were encouraged to be larger than life in our topics and language...it was a GREAT environment to freely express ourselves. I may use salty language but NEVER have I said ANYTHING as morally reprehensible as Bill O said the day Elizabeth Edwards died..."she died with great dignity, but she was really obese...no wonder Edwards cheated on her."

Loraine O'Donnell

In my humble estimation, Bill 'O is probably one of the "worst" radio performers this town has ever seen. How he convinced Dick Greene to host a show is a mystery (unless he was instrumental in securing the financing to make the buy)

His TV show (Sundays @ 11:30 PM on Channel Two) will only have a six week run...which is about six weeks too long.

Double edged sword..

On one hand we're certainly talking about AM radio much more than before. On the other hand, its' clearly for the wrong reasons , as opposed to top-notch programs and/or terrific, hard-nose journalism, now focused on this massive talent upheaval. Saw the article this morning and read with interest how this whole situation went down. I dont know the details and members of this board with direct, first hand knowledge, can clearly provide unfettered comments & actions.

Gotta agree with VGJ; Bill O' has zero charisma with hosting a talk show. Id almost rather watch "Wingin it!" on Channel 4.

Good effort by Jane Kwiatkowski @ Buffalo News. Got some good information to follow up her article from yesterday's paper.

Loraine has a right to be upset. And I still question not only the decision to allow Bill O to have a program five days a week, but the move a few months ago to EXPAND the show from two hours to three.

Hopefully Loraine expresses her opinion. She could not be reached to comment but I'm thinking a letter to the editor to The News would be a good way to reach the masses. Maybe Artvoice will also do a story?

Brad is heading south. I'm sure the vacation was planned months in advance, but is it wise to leave town at this point in time? I'm sure Dick Greene has things under control and will be in touch with Brad via cell phone, but what is needed right now is LEADERSHIP. We're seeing WECK in the headlines - something Brad wanted to do when he first aired his "manifesto" aimed at WBEN and WGR - but for the wrong reasons.

I'm listening to Dennis Miller right now. Is this yesterday's show? If so, I haven't been able to figure that out yet. That's a good thing for WECK as they hopefully figure out what they are going to do with the 9 am to noon shift. Live and local was the plan but maybe that's just not going to happen anymore.

Nice.

That frustrated, pudgy little man will be even less attractive on television. Cranky old fart.

“The Bill O’Loughlin Show. Talk Radio on TV"

My guess is that this TV experiment will be even dumber than the title.

And as far as how he got a radio show, even an expanded version....I believe he brought some sponsors to the table. He certainly wasn't drawing much audience.

Let's take a look at the bottom line. Three years, and WECK's morning show can't crack a 1 share 35-64 Adults - which should be their target audience. They don't even make the top 20 in the market. Ditto Bill O. Ditto Brad. Ditto the rest of the station. In their target demo.

WECK is getting beaten badly by WWWS, a computer sitting in a closet at Entercom, and broadcasting with a teapot signal on 1400. Meanwhile, WBFO's shift to talk in mid-days is growing nicely.

So, bottom line? WECK needs to move in another direction. Brad may have gotten some people to notice what's going on at WECK, but he hasn't moved the needle. OK, at least not yet. I'm sure that there's more to come. Meanwhile, if you have a "can't fail" idea, contact [email protected].

Didn't Brad just take over about 5 minutes ago? You think it might be a good idea to see if his ideas work before calling it a failure?

I've been reading this board for years, and saw so much complaining about real people being replaced in radio by computers. Most of the people on here couldn't stand Jack and the Lake, etc.

But, now you root for a computer in a closet over Entercom over a station that employs real people, because you hate Brad or Dick Green or somebody associated with the station.

Brad's had control of his own show for several books now. He hasn't moved the needle. I did say "OK, at least not yet". I'm not sure that reading from the Buffalo News is a move in the right direction.

I'm far from a proponent of automation. What I'm saying is that some hard decisions need to be made about the direction of the station. Apparently, that's what's happening now.

When does Bill O's TV show start? Any chance he mentions his past work on WBEN and WECK or does he just plunge ahead and amaze us all with "talk radio the way it oughta be."

"Talk Radio the way it Oughta Be" - what's that exactly? Boring? I wonder if Bill's "rosy cheeks" will be visible on WGRZ or if they'll have a cracker jack make-up artist there to hide his "glow"

I really don't get this whole Bill O thing.

He is such a non-talent, why is anyone giving him the time of day as if he's some ratings-getter. He clearly is not.

He's awkward and out-of-touch. What in the world is Ch. 2 hoping to achieve with this guy?

I'm guessing that they're getting paid for the airtime. How much can he hurt them at 11:30 Sunday night?

HA! You're probably right.

That really is the art of EGO hard at work!

Let's just be thankful that loon from Williamsville on Saturdays on WBEN doesn't have THAT kind of money to waste.

Does Bill O's TV "experiment" start tonight?

I'm very curious to hear what Brad has to say whenever he returns from his vacation. A lot going on involving WECK, and like it was stated on another thread, Brad NOT being on the air last week couldn't have come at a worst time.

Brad said the day before he left that "The Best of Riter Radio" and "The Best of Nick Mendola" are concepts he wants to continue to use whenever he or Nick are off. He doesn't necessarily believe in fill-in hosts. Interesting approach, but I think the wrong one to have if you're going to brag you are "LIVE AND LOCAL" from 6 am to 6 pm.

Unless the live and local thing is going to quietly die off now that Dennis Miller is back in the regular rotation, sometimes TWICE a day when the Yanks are off or play a West Coast game.

Maybe Brad is writing a brand new "manifesto" as he lies on a beach in SC?

Airing "best of" is only a good idea if the material was so interesting, it is worthy of a second listen by an audience. Do these "best of's" pass that test?

If not, live & local is what's best. Unless of course you have to pay someone to do that....lol.

Brad believes in "Best Of's" and that's the way it is going to be. He's the PD. Case closed.

If the material is especially dated or not terribly interesting, why air it?

"best of" is probably one of the most misused phrases in local talk radio.

The board-op running today's "Best Of Brad" show just said he's back tomorrow.

On a related note, they are re-running an interview with Mark Poloncarz, who is running for county executive. Pretty good interview, but I swear this also aired on either Thursday or Friday afternoon last week.

Then again, it is a "Best Of" show, so it must be a really good interview in Brad's mind.

All kidding aside, I await Brad's monologue tomorrow. Lots of ground to cover, and it doesn't involve the Bills or Sabres.
