I'm pissed off that WILD is now broadcasting the Communist propaganda crap that's China Radio International! Red China censors the internet, limits freedom and controls the lives of their citizens! Now, they're pushing into our airwaves and filling our minds with Commie crap! This is the last straw!
OH! OH! OH!

i find it hard to fathom WILD could put a better signal in Boston than numerous Sackville shortwave relays currently employed.

i will admit, i actually listen to that drive-time show on CRI. what is wrong with me?

Maybe I'm not very observant, but in my one period of listening (half an hour--give or take), I did not notice any propaganda. In fact, at one point I was quite surprised to hear the two English-speaking hosts of a "news" program (a man with a Canadian accent and a woman with a British accent) criticize the traffic in Beijing as being impossible and unbearable and the over-crowded living conditions of the workers who come to Beijing from rural China as being completely unsatisfactory. It was my understanding that the Chinese government would not tolerate any public criticism of any facet of life in the People's Republic. I suggest that, before you conclude that the broadcasts are nothing but Communist propaganda, you actually try listening for a little while. I rather doubt that you have done that.

If, as I suspect, the Chinese government is paying for these broadcasts, considering how well heeled China is, what, exactly, would you expect a boycott of WILD to accomplish? I did not hear any commercials. If you want to boycott something, I suggest you organize a boycott of all products made in China. Of course, in 2011, neither you nor any others of us would be able to survive for very long without products made in China.

LINKS TO an article orig in the Washington Post:

>>"The stations don't broadcast outright propaganda, but rather programming with a Chinese focus and flavor, tailored for local audiences. In Galveston, the format mixes China-centric international news, talk shows about the status of China's women and a healthy dose of gangsta rap — all in English."

The Post's article says that CRI attempts to "expand its influence" around the world. It's
called a "multi-billion dollar effort" (does China buy up U.S. debt?)

Wikipedia, under "U.S. debt":
>>As of January 2011, foreigners owned $4.45 trillion of U.S. debt, or approximately 47% of the debt held by the public of $9.49 trillion and 32% of the total debt of $14.1 trillion. The largest holders were the central banks of China, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

China does a lot of things we "Westerners" don't agree with.

The U.S. does a lot of things the "Chinese Leaders" don't agree with.

But if the two nations are going to co-habitate this planet, it might be in our best interest to get to know each other a bit better.

I sat through a lecture followed by a question-and-answer time last year by a professor.. actually a DEAN at a nearby university. He supervises the student exchange program between his university and two Chinese universities. In his lecture he outlined the history of "modern" China.... covering the last 200 years.

Someone in the audience asked him to explain why the Communists were able to take over China following the end of WW II. His answer was a bit shocking at first but then he supported it with some reasonable logic. Tactical decisions by American Christian missionaries along with some European missionaries resulted in a social situation in China where the masses of peasants decided Christianity was their enemy and Communism was their friend.

Even if it was "communist propaganda", how many people do you really think listen to an AM daytimer in 2011?

Yes let's boycott.
Anytime I hear stories about Chinese goons feeling up little kids at Chinese airports it makes me angry.

Yes let's boycott.
All those stories of Chinese drones killing scores of innocent people make me angry.

I would like to hear Chinese music, leave the Gangsta Rap to the pirates.

One man's "propaganda" is another man's "alternative"...

Glib, but misleading -- like propaganda itself. But I guess if you can rationalize paid block programming because it's good capitalism, you can even justify it when it comes from a communist government: the fine folks who want to do away with capitalism, democracy and free expression.

Propaganda is only an alternative to truth. And it ain't "free" expression if you gotta pay for the privilege.
