I'm quitting K-Rock

K-Rock2 (June 2006-November 2009)

Its over. As I was greeted by new Creed into Bends-Radiohead into new Alice in Chains this morning, I decided to take a good long break from K-Rock. I have many fond memories of K-Rock2 and they introduced me to many new artists, including:

Spoon
Modest Mouse
Klaxons
Vampire Weekend
MGMT
Death Cab for Cutie
Snow Patrol
Kaiser Chiefs
Phoenix
The Shins

Alas, it is all gone now. But what a ride, three years worth of actual alternative programming is scarce, and only comes through once every ten years! Sadly, now K-Rock2 has become K-Rock, the failed terrestrial frequency never attracted an audience with its music format. And, much like how I couldn't listen to K-Rock when it was on 92.3, I can't listen to K-Rock over the Internet. As of now WFNX will be my go-to alternative station, unless someone can point out to me a better alternative.

Give L.A. radio a try, KROQ, KYSR, or Indie1031.com

Or, more locally, Altrok 90.5 HD2 down in Lincroft, NJ. If you're actually in Brooklyn at the moment, a directional *might* get you a usable signal, and there's a reason our logo visually recalls FM106.3's old bumpersticker (I mean, apart from the design being suggested by the same guy who designed the original...) I've heard one person say online "hey, this is seriously fighting with KEXP for my attention" and while I think that's a bit hyperbolic, we think what we're doing is kinda fun.

Basically, you've summed up our currents policy rather nicely. Plus, we've got a soft spot for classic Modern Rock artists and their new material - there's a very good recent song by The Church in our rotation starting today - as well as their classic material, of course.

http://wbjb.org/altrok will bring it in for you if you can't get the HD signal (but try again soon.)

BTW: I know you may already know about us, but I can't resist a plug...especially when you manage to describe what we're doing pretty much exactly.

Let's be specific here:

K-Rock, the failed terrestrial frequency never attracted an audience with its music format without Howard Stern.

If only New York had a rock station that didn't play any of the following artists- Coldplay, Kings Of Leon, The Killers, Third Eye Blind, Bon Jovi (since friggin' LITE FM plays "Livin' On A Prayer" for crying out loud!!!).

Hmm...I do play Coldplay ("Shiver", from their first album, and one track from the latest) and Kings Of Leon (mostly from their pre-"Use Somebody" days.)

The Killers have a couple of good cuts; particularly "Tranquilize" with Lou Reed, and their not-half-bad cover of Joy Division's "Shadowplay". They're over the top and born to play arenas, so if I was playing Duran Duran in the 80's (I did) I see no problem playing The Killers now. Duran Duran lost me with "The Reflex", we'll see where The Killers do it.

I just got the new Nickelback...and I won't be playing it. Aheh.

eventually some NY station will reap the rewards of peppering their playlist with some first wave legends and exciting folks stuck on the L.I.E.
