We now have radio generated by computer, encoded so computers can detect which computer is sending the artificially synthesized signal, make a record of the reception, and award ratings points. We have advanced to the point where, theoretically, no human interaction is required. Why? Corporate says, "Because the mission is too important for us to allow you to jeopardize it."
I am reminded of the comment made after the advent of Drake-Chenault automated programming... that Bill Drake made disk-jockeys sound like robots, then made robots sound like disk-jockeys. (As an aside, while googling to try to support this statement, I ran across an article from Billboard in 1967 in which Ron Jacobs defended KHJ's jocks, specifically saying "The DJ's are not robots". Further down the page is a picture of a new Capitol Records act, The Knack. 12 years before "My Sharona", apparently there was a different "The Knack" on Capitol records. Us humans, if we are lucky, learn something new every day!)
