Got a mailing the other day from something called Impact Research telling me they need my thoughts on LA radio programming. If I fill out and return the postcard, I'm entered into a drawing for $1,000.

My assignment, if I choose to accept it - listen to 100.3 for at least an hour, and then rank it on the music, whether it's a good "at work" station, and general comments. This is a pretty slick way to get people to listen to your station, you guys have any experience with this? Wouldn't Arbitron frown on this sort of thing?

From LA Radio.com:
100.3/The Sound is set for a big mailer – hundreds of thousands – promoting the station and that it is all about the music … Speaking of The Sound, the Triple A station is eliminating the live overnight shift. Dred Scott and Lee Elliot are exiting the station. “Very few stations still have live overnight djs, as you know,” emailed The Sound’s pd Dave Beasing. “It's a difficult decision, but we'll reallocate that expense to add to our marketing budget.”

...
These are the mailers they're sending? Way to trick the public The Sound!!!

Innovative for sure....Gotta give Bonneville some credit for that!

However, still a numbingly boring station, with music to match!

They blew their shot at going Top 40 and going after KIIS! Gotta be kickin themselves after seeing what AMP has done??

But, they still have a chance to do FM Talk, before someone beats em to it!.....They have the signal and they have the budget!

Or will they go down in flames, having tried to make something out of nothing?

All the while, having spent a fortune on a loser, from the beginning?

Stay tuned!

how's their billing? I'm in the minority here...but I like 100.3.
and yes, I listen at work on occasion...and do not find the station boring.

If you think they have the budget to go talk, you're delusional. They just fired their overnighters to save cash and have let go of many staffers in the last year and a half. Could Bonneville allocate the money to do it? Probably, but will they. Really doubt it. And what if they did? All it would take is for KFI to add an FM signal to blow them out of the water. Starting up would cost a fortune and I don't think they want to blow even more cash on a gamble. By the way, it's not the greatest signal, just okay.

Here in the Bay Area, I received postcards and regular tri-fold flyers in the mail from KFOG ("World Class Rock") for years - probably a decade or more. They contained rock news, drawings, and special deals for us "Fogheads" including occasionally first crack at concert tickets.

KFOG has devoted fans to this day, though it's not the station it once was. (What's new, right?). But I was never particularly a "Foghead," it was just one of many stations I listened to. I don't even know how I got on their mailing list - I must have filled out some form at a concert, or something.

The mailings stopped a few years ago - probably when Cumulus bought the station.

Actually Bonneville was one of the few companies that survived the economic downturn quite well. 100.3 should flip to FM Talk. Regardless, that format brings in a lot of money, and great ratings for the demographic it caters to. Bonneville should consider it. I don't see why they didn't add The Tasting Room to their lineup?!

It wouldn't be a hot talker. If Bonneville were to flip 100.3 to an FM Talk format, it would likely be a news-talker (like their sister station KTAR-FM in Phoenix).

Radio these days is run worse than Toyota. The idiots that run most stations these days are really dumb people who have no clue what people want or like. Turn the dial around and you will see clear evidence of this. Look at the idiots that drove KABC into the ground. Look at the idiots who made that programming choice on KFWB. Do I need to say more. The only saving grace is that the economy is horrible and most of these idiots will be gone in a year or two.

The vast majority of devout Mormons don't drink, but some do. Like any religion, there are a significant number who are less devout and practice the tenets of their religion with less fervor, and of course, there are some secular Mormons who are Mormon by background only. I have no idea what kind of Mormons run Bonneville, but I know that they didn't become as successful as they have become by programming only to Mormons.

What I was meaning was that Boneville doesn't sell ads to alcohol and cigarette companies on its station. Do you think they would have an entire show dedicated to this?

"...most of these idiots will be gone in a year or two."

No they won't. They will still be there. Two words will prove my point.
