I'm teed off: KFPT finally switched to sports

It happens for one single reason.

Money.

If you want to hear a non-profit, cause driven, station, then listent to Public Broadcasting. And, we all know how entertaining that can be. The progressive talk format has failed in every market it has tried. They flipped from Air America in Boston and Cincinatti in January. Now, when the home of the Kennedy's doesn't want liberal chat, Fresno is kind of a no-brainer.
Advertisers don't want to be on a liberal talk station. Why? Well, maybe it has something to do with the anti-corporation hosts. Who spends money on advertising at the national level? Corporations.

"The revolution is over Mr. Lebowski. The bums lost!"

Churchills1 is spot-on with that. It's about what sells...clearly, Progressive/Liberal/Lefty talk isn't working in a lot of places. KFPT's ratings under CBS were at best anemic; at worst, virtually non-existent. The signal was tremendous during the day (I could pick them up in South Sacramento in the mornings), but no one cared about the programming -- which, for the most part, wasn't all that entertaining.

The station was sold, and one of the conditions was a two year non-compete clause, meaning that the new owners had to switch to a non-talk format. Hence sports, which was acceptable.

Actually, KFPT was the SECOND HIGHEST rated AM station in Fresno. It beat all the four sports staions. And the new owners want to turn it into the 5th sportz station in town?

Let's go through this again slowly. Sports sells. Liberal talk does not. That's why there are 5 sports stations in this, or any town for that matter, and Air America affiliates are becoming more rare than the white rhino. Remember, it is a business, NOT a cause. The product must be palatable to the advertisers or they walk. If you don't believe me, go ask Don Imus.

And remember ",second highest rated am station" is like winning the silver medal at the Special Olympics.
