Imagine That

That the two biggest public demonstrations in th nation's capitol were organized, not by politicians or community leaders, but instead by talk show hosts. What does that say about the power of talk show hosts? What does that say about the state of leadership in this country?

It says that massive publicity stunts aren't as effective at bringing about effective political goals as they were back in the mid-20th century, but they're still good at generating radio ratings.

Part of it might be that the publicity stunts then weren't origanized by radio hosts. Dr. King was a community activist, not a talk show host. The goal today isn't to bring about social change, but to generate ratings. Mission accomplished!

This reminds me of that scene from the film Network where Howard Beale asks "Why me?" when he was asked to put forth a new message. The response "Because you're on television dummy!"

Talk show hosts have free publicity on their shows to promote these things while politicians may get a message buried in the news.

The reason: Because they're on radio & television dude! ;)
