Imaging: Listener Testimonies

Does anyone know of a company that supplies Generic Listener Testimonies for station imaging? I'd deeply appreciate it. Thanks!
 
I know it's theatre of the mind and all, but why not actual listeners?

Sore spot with me. Station flipped formats to country at 4 PM on a Sunday, and already had "listener testimonials" saying they loved the station. It was obvious they weren't local and I thought it was one of the lamest things I'd ever heard.
 
LOL...that's is awesome. In the 10 minutes since they went on the air, they wrangled some hardcore P1's into the studio to voice how much they loved the station.

Classic. You're so right. Wait about a week and put those on. Geez.

What a concept! And I agree. "Listener Comments" from people who never heard your station are pretty lame. I'll accept them as somewhat valid on a satellite fed station (such as Salem's TCM, TWIP or SG feeds) where the listeners at least were responding to the satellite content somewhere where it is aired ... but then there is no guarantee those are not generics as well.

Even real testimonials that were actual listeners to the station airing them get old after a while. It is work, but I believe they all should be expired after at most a month of airplay. The sad stations are the ones playing the same testimonies for several years. Don't they get anyone new?
 
The ones that crack me up are the canned listener testimonials that have a different accent. There's nothing like hearing a New Yorker accent in Kansas or Oklahoma.

I have to agree with the majority of posters on this one, though I hope you don't take this as a personal attack, Mr. Joey. That being said, we found it quite easy to fish for testimonials by dedicating a phone extension (with the obligatory message that "users agree to consent to us using any part of their message on the air without compensation, at the discretion of the station alone, blah, blah, blah"). Like phoners for live jocks, the temptation is to use too many of them or to run even decent ones too long. In most cases, we have to edit down to the "meat" of the call... get in, get out, and leave them wanting to hear more, without distracting from the station's overall flow. I also like hearing live testimonials from events and concerts, which tend to encourage listeners not to miss the next one.

I bumped into a woman wearing a black and pink t-shirt from my old, long-defunct AC station one day. She told me someone gave it to her in exchange for promoting our station for a cheesy cable TV commercial testimonial. Unfortunately, she never actually listened to the station. THAT must be why we folded! :D
 
I'd rather have none at all...then run some that have been recorded
or canned from a service providing them.

Kids are the best... grab them when they are on a tour. Tell the school
they are from and listeners will love it...kids love it too...go home tell mom
and dad...aunts and uncles...grandma and grandpa ... give them magnets or
pens to take with them with station on them...bingo...new listeners maybe?
new relationships? and kids listening too! what a concept!

Hey mom...turn on (insert station calls and freq here)

Hey guys... I know I'm the 'new kid on the block' posting here... but just a little advice...

Your listeners... aren't stupid. It's already been mentioned about the fake accents, etc.

One of the coolest things I heard recently was a family I had used on a sharathon spot telling me that lots of people at their church recognized their voices and story and loved that they listened to the station and then asked more. Sure... that's not going to happen very often. Probably 1/1000 chance, but it was a great experience for that family and one they aren't going to forget. It also reinforced in their friends/families' minds that we ARE live and local and they the people working there and listening are their neighbors.

Getting listeners to move beyond the 'I love the music' or 'I listen on my way to work' can be tricky... but... it's not rocket science. I like to think that if I can do it, anyone can. It just takes caring enough and actually listening to what your caller or listener at an event is saying. Keep questions open ended and frame stuff around the music. Some tips are to ask them about the music first. Ask about their favorite song, or lyric. Our listeners listen because of the music. Music and companionship are key so be their friend and care about their favorite song. 9 times out of 10 they will tell you their song then go off on why. Sometimes you can ask what it is that song does for them or go into when they listen, about thier family, etc.

Again... take the time to *listen*. You can pick out stuff that makes them tick then let them be the star and blab about your station. Sometimes its hit or miss, but the #1 reason people give to a station is because they've had an emotional connection with it (thank you Tommy Kramer) and this is one way to do it or start that tie.

Be their friend not just a maniac with a mic in their face. ;-)
 
It's crazy when stations use those generic testimonials. It's much better to get them from real
listeners. Ya know - here's a idea - lets get the talent that we send out for the remote to do
that instead of sitting behind a table in the back of a tent looking totally upaprochable.

I used to make my jocks stand in front of the table with stickers exc. Being local and in touch
will get you everywhere!!!

I heard some testimonials just yesterday that said "I love listening to your station" and "Your station plays the best music" and it struck me as completely pointless. One even said "This station is the best in the area." Why even bother if you are not even trying to feign interest in "listener involvement?"
