IMMATURITY On 14.275 Mhz. USB

Hi everyone:Is it just me or has there been a tremendous amount of immature 11 meter-like activity on 14.275 Mhz USB??I say this because I can hear it with my ICOM IC-706 MKII-G and my mega-cheapo coathanger setup that I threw together which is plugged directly into the back of the radio.Even when there have been legit QSOs on there, some a--hole Or a group of a--holes for all I know) would find some excuse to get on that freq. (or very close to it) and cause malicious QRM.If these are licensed Hams, then they deserve to lose their licences. If they're bootleggers, I just hope they've got an IRA or two 'cause they'll need it to pay off the FCC.To give you an example of what I've been hearing, I've heard just about anything and everything ranging from silly PC-originated sound effects to (Not even a half hour ago now) old Rocky & Bullwinkle clips. If this is old hat to you old timers on the HF bands, then please excuse this post (I'm fully aware of the mess known as 14.313 BTW). Hopefully Riley Hollignsworth is monitoring over there and is taking action. ;)If i can, I'll do a short video or two sometime (I'd rather do a video as then people will actually see what freq. the radio is tuned to as the cam will show it) with my Logitech QuickCam STX as its got a pretty good built-in mic so I don't need to stretch a long cord to plug to the line in jack. :) I'll then either send them to Riley via email or put them on a live page on my website for THE WHOLE WORLD to see and hear.Gee....That's not a bad idea. Maybe if a few potty mouthed Hams found themselves on some Ham's website in a negative light, they just might change their ways beforeRilley catches them. ;DThen again, if they're anything like K1MAN, they probably wouldn't even notice....Anyhow...Just wanted to post a heads up for those of you who haven't been listening. :)Cheers & 73 :)Pat CookHam Call - KB0OXDDenver, Colorado

Hi everyone:Yeah. His name is Riley Hollingsworth. His job is FCC Special Legal Advisor For Amateur Radio. In short....He's THE FED of Ham Radio ;)Does that answer your question? Cheers :)Pat Cook, KB0OXDDenver, Colorado

Hello Pat,I've heard of this RILEY before........ (Is he a nice guy???)I thought this kind of stuff only happend on 11meters .. I do remember hearing about it happening on 80 quite a bit though (3.95Mhz to be exact)Ah well

Only if you're on his good side - Hi...Hi ;)

HA! That's a laugh if I've ever heard one.

Then you have some basic knowledge of what I'm talking about. It's also been known to happen on 14.313 Mhz. as well. :(Cheers & 73 :)Pat Cook, KB0OXDDenver, Colorado

Yes, the FCC DOES care...they have been handing out some very stiff fines over the last ten years, and it has helped get some of the worst offenders off the air. You may not believe it, but the ham-bands are FAR better than a decade ago, where RF Warfare was a nightly occurance...

14.313??!! Are those guys still alive?

Ten years ago, that frequency was worse than CB Channel 6. An ongoing war between several parties: "Big Al", "Polly", "Pork Butt", "Herbie" in the Virgin Islands, and several others whom I can't remember right now. Excessive power, music, sound effects, and deliberate off-frequency operation were all part of the arsenal. Riley Hollingsworth was supposed to be "monitoring and taking action" back then, too.

The nighttime equivalent of 14.313 was 3.9845. Same players, different propagation.

In short, 14.275 Mhz. is the Ham equivalent of a troll-filled Internet board right now? I'll have to fire up the old Realistic portable reciever and see if I can hear some of this action before everyone gets busted by the FCC.

After WB2OTK Rich (Pork) and K4OKA (Al) split ways in 1995, things turned into all out RF Warfare on 14.313 and 3.894.5. You could pretty well count on all the above mentioned jamming from say--6PM until after midnight. When others who knew both parties attempted to have a contact there, they were jammed from both sides. It was a mess. Al lost his ticket for 6 months and 'OTK (in a less than strange series of events) actually gave up his ticket voluntarily. Neither are on the air anymore.

If it weren't for Riley Hollingsworth interviening directly--and in both cases--personal visits to the offending stations, it would still be a nightly mess.

The current 14.275 problems are still a result of how the K1MAN "broadcasts" were mishandled. K1MAN is pretty much off the air, yet his supporters and detractors still duke it out on that frequency--as that is where K1MAN would often fire up without seeing of the frequency was already in use.

You can read all the archives on this on arrl.org as well as QRZ.com.

The original poster put it correctly as "immaturity"...especially since many of the worst offenders were in their 60's, 70's, and YES, even 80's.

Go figure...

14.313 Idiots Revisited

I remember there were two tape loops being played constantly. One featured a male voice saying "You ever notice how the jamming stops when Big Al talks? K4OKA, Mister Jammer." The other featured a male voice singing "The Pork Butt Song." "Pork Butt song...Pork Butt song...I I I....I I I....yes, it's Pork Butt song, Pork Butt song."

I also remember a few minor players: "Ralph the Thief" and "Dumb A** Donnie."

I cant believe someone would be so dumb to do this on ANY HAM BAND...

I would think a group of hams would get together and DF the signal straight away!! (Then take out clippers and finish the job ;D)

I've noticed ppl doing stuff like this on 11 meters also, and sometimes ppl go out looking for the scumbags........ (One time an A0 emission was on 27.275AM for 1 week (yes 7 days) and someone finally started to try and find it........ They found the carrier!!! SOMEONE RIGGED A RADIO IN A PARK AND HID THE BASE ANTENNA IN A TREE (I cant believe it kept transmitting for that long)

1 good thing did come out of it though, the person got a new radio and antenna!! (The 1 who found it)

There are roughly a million hams in the U.S. - unfortunately, out of any community of a million there *will* be a handful of immature selfish jerks.

We did something similar about 25 years ago although in this case, the target justified the means.

There was one particular agitator on the local CB channel. This guy loved to get on-the-air at night (usually intoxicated) and cuss everybody out. Music and noise toys were also in his arsenal. He ran a Hy-Gain Super Penetrator at about 70 feet and had some serious RF behind it. Claimed to have 500 watts, although we were never able to confirm this. When this guy was active, there was no way you could talk over him. We were able to easily locate his home 10-20, however.

The frequency in question just happened to be CB Channel 14. As you may remember, this is where nearly all of the cheap "kiddie" walkie-talkies operated up until the late 1970s when they migrated to 49.860Mhz.

We took an old Archer Space Patrol, wired two 12-volt lantern batteries in parallel, taped the press-to-talk button down with strapping tape, then placed the whole mess inside of a Tupperware container (to protect from rain damage.) Cut a small hole in the top for the antenna to poke through, then sealed the opening with silicone.

This guy knew he wasn't well liked and so he kept a close eye on his property to keep would-be vandals away. Too risky to go into his yard. (He had threatened others in the past, claiming to keep a loaded 12-gauge right next to the window.) However, there was a wooded outlot directly behind his house.

One night, we took our contraption to the outlot. Climbed a tree up to about 20 feet, turned it on, then secured it to the tree with bungee cords.

Result? A 30db carrier being transmitted continuously into the agitator's radio! The guy went nuts! At first, he didn't realize what the problem was. Thought something was wrong with his radio. When he realized someone was deliberately throwing a dead carrier on him, he drove himself crazy trying to locate the source. He NEVER found it! Because we had used two parallel lantern batteries and the walkie-talkie drew such a small current (it was maybe 50mW at the most), the signal lasted for SEVERAL WEEKS!

Since he could not communicate at all on Channel 14, the guy migrated up to Channel 19 and started harassing the truckers instead. We didn't get rid of him completely, but it sure solved OUR problem!

Well, I have to jump in here. Back in the early 1990s when I would hear all the crap on 14.313 and 14.300, it was the Maritime Mobile Net that was the subject of all the crap from Herbie and the gang. Anyone remember the "RODNEY" crap on there?

My neighbor was Randy, WA3HLP who was part of the Maritime Mobile Net as a net control. I don't know whatever happened to Randy or any of the mess but did hear Herb lost his license, but I see he is back on again.

On 75 meters, there used to be a WA4"DOG", not sure if he was WA4D or WA4DOG, but he was a trouble maker too back then.

Lastly, is the Maritime Mobile net defunct now?
