... the March PPM reports that started arriving yesterday showed all-news and information formats up, and music formats down.

But this was not a disaster for music FMs nor a total victory for news and talk. The changes in specific music formats were less than an aggregate share point in most markets.

"From a national view Nielsen revealed the news/talk format increased from a 12.1 in February to 13.3 in March and all news stations increased 2.4 to 2.9 month-over-month (Adults 18+). During a presentation Tuesday, April 14, Nielsen also showed that most music formats lost ground, with AC taking the biggest hit, dropping from 8.3 in February to 7.7 in March. Pop CHR gave up half a share (5.6-5.1) while hot AC tumbled 4.6-4.2.

Of course, the impact of the virus was not felt in the first two weeks of the survey period (which began in the last week of February) and even then was felt differently in various markets depending on the early impact of the endemic.

It doesn't seem like there was much bump for News/Talk in markets where there is an All-News station.

In New York WABC and WOR were stable.
In LA KFI was up, but KNX was up more
In Chicago WLS was down but WGN was up.
In San Fran KSFO and KGO were stable.
In Philly, WPHT was down.

Meanwhile in all of those markets the all-News station was up, as were the NPR member stations.

I want to see Seattle, which was having COVID-19 cases essentially the entire duration of the survey. That market is due out this evening.

Perhaps they lost credibility when they changed their views on the virus? Or perhaps that audience simply went to TV.

Yes, Good point. Perhaps the 70-death crowd became very concerned about their chances if they were to be infected and started searching for some truth. I don't listen (much) but you aren't getting that on network talk.

Sports/Talk had the most impact on the format since the leagues had to shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However in some cities like San Francisco All News KCBS Radio they had a 9.9 in the ratings in March. Also KQED-FM the News/Talk station had 8.7 in the ratings since California's shelter in place orders was announced.

Not many sports stations stations were badly effected. KNBR in SF was the worst I've seen while browsing the markets, and that was still a drop of less than 1 share. The sports stations in New York, LA, Chicago, Houston and Seattle all did very well, with most being flat or only off a tenth or two.

Separately, I wrote at noon that Seattle would be interesting. Boy, is it ever!

In Washington DC Ratings in March was no surprise.

Yes News/Talk and all news in most of the markets sampled so far had higher ratings in March due to the Shelter in Place announcements and press conferences over the COVID-19 Updates.
