Impressed with WPRO 630's signal

630 WPRO was coming in loud and clear on my car radio at the Shoprite Plaza on Route 69 in Waterbury, Connecticut this morning. WPRV 790 wasn't as clear but still was listenable. (Though their programming isn't any more). The radio isn't anything special. Just the stock radio in my 95 Pontiac Sunfire. Had nothing better to do than spin the dial while waiting for A.J. Wright to open.

WPRO has the best signal in the market. I used to live in Rye, New York. They come in great next to the water. Same thing in York Beach, Maine. If they had programming which didn't concentrate so much on Rhode island politics, I believe their ratings would go through the roof!

When I was growing up I would tune into WNBC New York. The appeal for me was that their programming did not concentrate on New York at all. It was all about the comedy. You had Imus, Soupy Sales and Stern. It reallly was an all star lineup. The beauty of it was that none of these shows were politica at all. They were simply about having fun. So it did not matter where you were listening from. It was FUNNY radio for Everyone EVERYWHERE. If WPRO did the same thing with some good people their ratings would skyrocket.

WPRO gets out well ND during the day. At night it goes directional to protect WMAL in Washington DC and CFCY in Charlottetown, PEI. Its 2 towers are 87.5 degrees high at 630 kHz and spaced a little over a half wavelength apart.

Right On, Sky! That's the sort of radio that I really ache for, and don't find these days.

My first exposure to Stern was also by way of WNBC....and it quickly became "must listen" radio.

OH!....Before I forget....in addition to the folks you already mentioned....Wolfman Jack in the evenings, and Joey Reynolds in the overnight hours were also part of WNBC in those times.

Yep. I tuned in Stern by accident in April 1984. I instantly knew there was something special about that station. The next thing I knew I was buying blank tapes every week to tape this stuff. Tapes I still have to this day. Wolfman Jack's Producer was EJ Crummy who later went on to take over for Wolfman Jack. EJ Crummy (A.k.a. Joe Crummy) went on to do radio in Los Angeles. The guy was great on WNBC. His co-host was Jane Norris. EJ would bring in his guitar and they would do a very light hearted entertainment program. It was like sitting around a campfire with friends all night. He would play his guitar, goof around with callers and there were tons of laughs all night long. It was so much fun to listen to. It honestly was the least stressful radio show you could have ever heard. It was truly awesome. This is the kind of radio that needs to come back. These days when you turn on talk radio you are guaranteed a fight. Unfortunately the comedy is all but gone. Now it's just a bitter political battle back and forth. That isn't comedy. That's the road to high blood pressure and prescriptions to Prozac! That's what todays radio has become. "All stress, All the time!"

There is no Soupy Sales and the piano to take you through your lunch hour anymore. There is no EJ Crummy with his guitar. How about Larry Glick on WBZ? He did the same sort of show that WNBC was famous for. The kind of show where you were guaranteed laughs!

These days there really is no such thing as TALK RADIO anymore. It's now POLITICS RADIO. Even Imus who at one time focused on Comedy, now has taken the political route. That could explain why his ratings are lower then ever. Compare his numbers now to what they were in 1985 when he was funny. The change is drastic! The one guy left who stayed true to his form is Stern. That's why I love that guy. It's the only place left where I can turn on my stereo in the morning and know that I am going to get the same kind of radio that made me laugh 25 years ago.

C'mon folks. Nobody's done really good talk radio since Long John Nebel (WOR, Your Station In New York!). Always entertaining guests who journeyed out to the transmitter site on The Jersey Mud Flats to be part of the show. T'was from Long John that I learned about "St. Anthony's Fire" - fascinating book (The Day of St. Anthony's Fire) and a host of other obscure topics that never failed to amuse and expand one's outlook. Not at his best when he got into UFO stuff but there was so much more......

There are mp3 downloads online; worth trying a few if you're thinking to working toward a unique style.

AM Coast to Coast is good. They don't dwell on politics and you always get a good mix of interesting callers. It's probably one of the best shows available on Providence radio right now.

I found MarcB's DX report interesting because there was a time when PRO-AM was weakest to the west. They would get beat on by 620 out of Newark and that 640 out of Springfield.
