Imus affiliates

WQYK-AM in Tampa Bay was the very first Imus affiliate. At the time, I was the Chief Engineer for WQYK. As I recall, we were never compensated. We paid to carry the program.

I worked for a Howard Stern affiliate in the late 90's & we paid a hefty price to carry him. Imus was probably not a freebie or he would have had affiliates galore. Even your local satellite delivered country station (the one that says "it's 12 past the hour") costs at least a few hundred dollars a month to be carried in Dufus Flats, Iowa....more in big towns like Peoria or Muncie.

There is likely some "out" in the contract where the show can be canceled quickly ... dropping an individual affiliate (or an affiliate leaving) would normally require more notice but even that can be solved in the usual way (money). An affiliate leaving without warning would likely be on the hook for the the cash price of the program as well as any barter agreement for spots for whatever length of time noted under cancellation in their contract ... even if they pulled the show content immediately. Contracts vary ... the ones my station has signed are nicer than most (generally barter only). One would have to read an Imus contract to know the exact rights and responsibilities.

In this case (Imus) the show went out of production. I don't care so I didn't follow it but what did CBS do with the air time? Did they provide a fill in program or did they just punt and force affiliates to scramble? If some station was asleep at the switch what would be airing? The silence fill?

CBS is feeding the stations Mike & The Maddog for the next 2 weeks 6AM-10PM. Normally Mike & The Maddog airs exclusively 1PM-630PM on 66 The FAN in NYC on the radio and on the YES Network (TV). I know of 3 stations not picking up Mike and the Maddog. 96.9 FM Talk in Boston is airing a local show hosted by Mike Barnickle 6AM-10AM. Previously Barnicle aired 9AM-10AM. KCAA 1050 in San Bernadino is airing The Best of IMUS. And WWDB AM 860 in Philly is running programming from Business Talk Radio Network, which is what they ran outside of mornign drive. (I belive after CBS's WPHT 1210 dropped IMUS, Westwood One began paying The Beasleys to run IMUS on WWDB AM 860).
