IMUS JOKES

OK, let's get on with it.

“There WAS some good news for Don Imus. Today he got a note from President Bush saying ‘Thanks for taking the Iraq war off the front page.’”
Jay Leno, in his April 12 Tonight Show monologue.

“HEAVE-HO’”
NY Post headline this morning. Inside: "Hello Imus Be Going."

Imus Be Going.

How come the N Post can get away with using Ebonics?

They be 'llowed to talk Ebonics. Why don't Imus be 'llowed?

Why can't Caucasian men speak Ebonics on the radio, but African-Americans are allowed to speak English?

It's a generational thing...

OOPS.
Dated reference.

Groucho's famous song: "Hello I Must Be Going."
Lyrics: http://www.ibras.dk/comedy/marx.htm#MustGo

Although everyone's favorite Groucho song might be from the Marx Brothers' "At The Circus:" "Lydia The Tattooed Lady."

Nope. That wasn't the problem. The problem was that you missed the point. That NY Post headline had a double meaning -- it could be taken one of two ways.

Here's another example. Back in the late 1960's, singer/guitarist Jose Feliciano did his soul version of the National Anthem at a baseball game. It caused a big controversy. Pittsburgh Press TV-Radio critic Vince Leonard wrote this headline about the incident, "Jose Can You See". He was making a pun on "Jose" sounding like "Oh, Say". Nothing wrong with that. But Jose Feliciano happens to be blind. So, while some people only got the reference to "Jose" and "Oh, Say", other people (presumably the more caring, sensitive people) took extreme offense at the alternate meaning.

Now, in 2007, the NY Post does the same thing. Some people will only see the inoffensive allusion to an old Marx Brothers song. Others will only see the mocking of the way certain people can't manage to conjugate the verb "to be" correctly.

Thanks to the over-reaction of the public, egged on by certain self-appointed leaders of a small segment of the population, we're all going to have to be very, very careful about what we say. Anyone who works on the radio will have to exercise extreme caution not to inadvertently or accidentally cross the invisible line into territory where the professional agitators can zero in on them.

You might think calling for people to repeat jokes about this situation is a pleasant way to change the subject from anything serious. Instead, you're simply opening the door for more arguing. The near term impact of this whole deal will be very negative for entertaining content on news/talk radio for some time to come.

I'm not missing your point, but I'm not making mine.

You might disagree, but I think Imus DESERVES ridicule.
Being offended by what he's done, I regard any sort of verbal "caning" as appropriate.

Bill Maher had Dan Rather on last week; and he-and-other-guest-panelists made 2 points about comedy.

a.) Too often, news media get too cozy with sources.
Comedians' barbs serve a useful headline purpose...keeping important stories high-profile.

b.) In the new media world, monologues have become a useful way for people-who-don't-habitually-read-a-newspaper-every-day to KNOW what's up.

And the unintended consequence of this whole Imus fiasco, its silver lining, is that it has served to tee-up a valuable national conversation about race; and, secondarily, gender. You regard it as "arguing;" I hear what-folks-are-saying-now as "dialogue."

Several hundred years before Jay Leno or TV were born, court jesters played as-important a role.

In another Marx Brothers classic, Groucho sang, "I'm Against It!"

Q:What was the only Imus sponsor not to blowout after the s*** hit the fan?

A: DEPENDS! :D

It's really interesting that there was no public outcry until someone who is not a listener, but someone with a liberal "watchdog group" with an agenda to silence the opposition, posted this "outrage" on a blog.

What we're witnessing is more EVOLUTIONARY than REVOLUTIONARY

30-some years ago, Dan Rather wrote a book entitled "The Camera Never Blinks."

Just a few years earlier Michigan Governor George Romney (Mitt's dad) had talked himself out of front-runner status for the Republican presidential nomination IN ONE WORD, when he came back from Viet Nam and claimed to have been "brainwashed."

Fast-forward to the cameraphone era. Michael Richards' gaffe wasn't contained in the time-and-space of that nightclub.

No longer is the consequence of words-spoken-on-radio -- or ANY event -- to real-time witnesses, y'know?
