IMUS ON WTAA

Nobody cares. I like Don personally..but I followed him when Hilarie and I were on WPHT, and the lead-in was HORRIBLE. We had to start from SCRATCH every day devoloping a cume. If PHILLY doesn't get him, I can't IMAGINE Atlantic City getting the show. If I was that station in AC, I'd put on the STRONGEST LOCAL MORNING SHOW POSSIBLE to shake up the town, making it a MUST LISTEN. INstead, let's just plug in a show that is SO inside and SO out of the mainstream that it's just gonna be overlooked on a station that doesn't make a dent. I'm telling you.. I LIKE Don personally, having worked with him. He's more likeable than many know..and I have personal proof. But his show is NOT going to help some stations. It MAY help a few, in certain markets, but I can't IMAGINE it will in AC or Philly if someone picks it up. Philly wants The Four Tops and Alternative rock for the blue collar folks, and a mediocre talk station that THINKS it's all about national politics. DO LOCAL SHOWS and make it VERY Philly. Duh. In AC, make it VERY real and talk about the REAL issues of living and working there. The ones that DO that WIN. The others will FAIL FAIL FAIL. THis is true for virtually EVERY market. If owners and bean-counters would only GET it. They wonder why the Time Spent Listening is down...DUH again. Sure..the CUME may be high..but are people PASSIONATE about THEIR favorite stations any more? Some can't even TELL you the call letters or dial position. It doesn't MATTER to them like it used to. "Wake Up Everybody"..THAT'S a Philly thing. TALK about the mayor in AC...did ANY of the FM stations in that market even MENTION that he was MISSING for weeks? LIkely not. Dopes.

BE BIG!

The Question is: Who is the strong talent in the AC market (or Philly for that matter)? I don't recall anyone in recent memory. So are you suggesting a 'import', if not off of a bird?

You know AC and Philly both suffer that 'second city' mentality. Smirconish? Oy. Whatever fare is offered in AC (including Mancow): Double Oy! The talent Guff is empty.

Hiya everyone...
I don't KNOW many of the people who inhabit the airwaves in AC, but their has to be SOMEONE there who can stir things up. I think there are still a few who DO on the AM band in AC/Cape May..but usually on signals that are less than flamethrowers. Look...RADIO is about being LOCAL. Then how does WABC do so well? They SUPERSERVE the CORE audience that wants NATIONALY POLITICAL (IDEOLOGY TALK.
How does NJ 101.5 do so well? THEY SUPERSERVE THE STATE. That was the niche from DAY ONE. Now many LOCAL stations in NJ have just thrown in the towel, thinking that their isn't enough $$ in local radio to be staffed by LOCAL talent. Yeah..there are some exceptions, as we know, but what I think of a 'LOCAL' station ain't what TODAY's operators think of it. It's all about the $$. WOBM used to have a NINE member FULL TIME News Departement. How did they afford it? EVERY NEWS CAST 24/7 had YEARLONG LOCAL advertisers sponsoring the cast. THAT helped PAY for the huge staff. By today's standards, that allocation would be thought of as suicide financially. But the station ALWAYS turned a profit. ALWAYS. Because IT WAS THE LOCAL STATION that was COMMITTED to the COMMUNITY. At one time, it was one of, if not THE most profitable Class A FM's in the COUNTRY!!!!!!!! With a HUGE overhead. But..at one time, they COMMANDED the advertising BECAUSE they were VIEWED as the LOCAL station for the county they served. It is not as dominating NOW, (in my opinion) because they put all the emphasis on "SOFT ROCK". They can say "Ocean County's Hometown Station" 100 times an hour, but if you don't BANG the listeners over the head with LOCAL content that they can RELATE to, they'll come. Explain how Bob Levy gets 25 shares on SUNDAY morning, but the weekday show gets much lower shares? How did I get similar ratings on WJRZ on SUNDAY morning? LOCALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL and TWO-WAY REACTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did I make myself clear?
Regardless of whether YOU like what Levy does, or what I did, IT WAS LIVE and it was LOCAL SUPERserving the listeners available for that DAYPART. So...a note to all you PD's and GM's reading this. KEEP putting on national shows, and voicetracking your once MOST IMPORTANT dayparts. See how quickly your profits erode, and BETTER YET..watch how people FLOCK to the internet to get ALL of their information. Local radio in Jersey and ALL OVER THE COUNTRY had better wake up. I know that stations have budgets that have to be met. But if OWNERS aren't committed to EXCELLENCE in broadcasting to the markets they serve around the clock, then sell the license to someone who WILL. I know...I just stabbed myself in the heart again.. Screw it. I ain't worked in a year, and because I've spoken the TRUTH, it's doubtful I ever will around here again. But maybe these operators need to HEAR the truth from people like me. Those of you NOT in radio, who are fans or radio geeks alike, YOU better make noise...or the very thing you LOVE about your local stations will DISAPPEAR before your ears REAL soon. I am STILL a STRONG believer in LOCAL radio. But is the LISTENER?!!?????!!??..and then by extension the ADVERTISERS? Local radio has ALWAYS been about results..and SERVING the public.and money for the owners. Some voice-tracked out of market person can NOT tell me what happened in my TOWN last night. Wake up folks.. HATS OFF to the remaining stations who are mostly LIVE and LOCAL in the state...I hope they kick ass over the stations who have gone in the other direction. But what is sad is...not everyone who LISTENS to the radio wants local stuff. Fine..but at least give us the option. If it fails, make it ALL Delilah ALL the time. They won't notice the difference.
I'm tired..and my fingers are bleeding.
BE BIG

On a previous thread,Sign of the times, I was compared to that guy in the Twigh light zone episode with his old radio. I followed that with a few things wrong with radio today. You hit the nail squarley on the head. With all the competition for listeners attention, you would think the suits would THINK but I don't know if they can, Maybe they arre worried about all the debt they have after buying every station in sight at over inflated prices. Maybe all they know is cut,cut and cut some more and hand out pink slips. Clear Channel is a disgrace, As one who is not one of your biggest fans, I have to say I agree with you 1000 percent.

Why don't they import Preston & Steve into AC instead of Mancow? Wouldn't P&S do well down the SJ Shore?

WTAA is a pea-shooter (400w N/D) and not much of a player. Air America is certainly not going to save it. Truly, it is the weakest link of the Access.1 AC portfolio.

When it signed on as WLDB, WTAA was only 250 watts. As was WCMC, Wildwood, and WMID, WFPG (WENJ), WOND. WOND is barely 1kw, but is a top 5 station. WMID is approx 850 watts, WENJ is 1kw, but only at night.

So actually, 400 watts is quite an improvement over 250.

WLDB was granted 1000 watts even before it became WUSS along with most early class IV’s. It had to reduce power several years ago when it lost it’s ¼ wave tower transmitter site to make way for the Marina expwy. When it moved to the WOND tower, it had to reduce power due to the greater than ¼ wave tower height and geographic location to protect co channel WBCB. Tom McNally most certainly can give the chronology of the power reduction.

In addition, the COL had to be changed from Atlantic City to Pleasantville, when Howard Green purchased and relaunched the frequency in 1997 (as then-ESPN affiliate WGYM).

I remember back when they were "The Game" as a FOX Sports affiliate. I couldn't pick them up in Wildwood (and still have trouble). Don't really know what would or could be a success on 1490. Whatever it would be would have to be compelling enough to get some listeners to "tune in through the static". A bunch of anti-Bush whiners apparantly isn't cutting it.
