Gentlemen-- Even I, a former radio geek, have significant trouble getting a listenable WABC signal in the heart of the Philadelphia market. Obviously no non-radio person would even attempt it. Throw on that IBOC hash and it's all over.
Clearing Imus in Philadelphia would be necessary for ABC Radio not so locals here can hear the "I" Man more clearly, but because the syndicator cannot nationally sell the show as being heard in this major market based on the fact that a very few select folks can listen thru static to New York.
I can't think of a Philadelphia station that would even consider picking up the show, outside of 860 (which of course could only run the show part-time being a daytimer). I'm not sure what the Beasley's deal with TRN is for Mancow, or if the station could even get out of that. I have no idea what Mancow's numbers are like; I'd imagine they're non-existent here. Then again so were Don Imus's. And don't blame the facility. Imus was carried, in its entirety, on alleged 50,000-watt WPHT for what, eight years? Few if anyone listened.
Philadelphia isn't an Imus friendly market. Boston and Providence are a different story. But here, no one cared. Now that he's a household name, he'll get some mileage for the first few weeks. That is, if a station chooses to pick him up.
Can anyone else think of a station here that would REALISTICALLY consider running Don Imus? I can't. Unless Citadel were willing to pay cash for clearances. Then maybe that supposed "King of Prussia" station, along with other brokered operations could be in the running if the price were right.
