Imus starts Monday on IQ 106.9

One more syndicated show 1210 used to carry. Should be a big improvement over whatever it is they were doing this week. Also a big improvement over having to see him on FBN.

Have always liked Imus although he's never been a huge hit in Philadelphia. I think he was on 1210 about ten years ago for a while and they dropped him, and then 860 WWDB picked him up but they dropped him too.

Has he been anywhere else here in Philly and does anyone know why these stations didn't keep him on?

This is not a criticism of Imus (I can take him or leave him) or a defense of Lionel (same), but this news is disappointing. Overall, my postings for IQ have been favorable (as you may or may not know) since its inception.

However (although I know Lionel was broadcasting from NYC), it is a shame to lose the only local program during the weekday. As I have previously posted, I like the Beck-Rush, etc lineup as they are entertaining (at the least; politics aside) and there should be room somewhere on the dial in Philly for the most popular talk show hosts in the country.

But mornings provide an opportunity for a radio station such as IQ to provide local flavor to the news and issues of the day. It appears from its website that IQ will have morning briefs from a local anchor, but full discussions on these topics were welcomed and will be missed.

Not that I would ever listen to this station, but I thought this was a 'joke' headline. Imus was funny as a disk jockey 40 years ago but his mumbling aloof style never worked for me without the music to buffer the show. I haven't heard him for several years, probably back to WWDB-AM & back then his muttering was pretty incoherent so I can't imagine how he sounds now. Talk radio is not learning the lesson to develop new, young talent especially if they hope for an under 55 year old audience.

To develop talent you need a farm system. Radio killed that years ago. So, instead, they keep people around forever or bring people with some name recognition in from outside radio. Apparently, the bean counters think anybody can do talk radio. After all, everybody talks; everybody has opinions. It's just like sitting on a bar stool. Isn't it?

Imus did alright on WPHT but management thought they could do better with Smerconish and a local show in morning drive (Smerconish was still local). WWDB decided to go with infomercials but no matter what they did, they are never going to get an audience there.

With no local hosts (I suspect even news is network with no local content), WWIQ-106.9 will spend very little on programming.

The truth is that they will probably make more money, even if they get less revenues from Imus than from a local morning show, since the station will no longer be spending money to produce a local morning show.

But then again, I believe WABC-770 New York also has no local shows, although some of their syndicated fare may in fact originate from its studios.

They've got Bob Grant doing an hour on Sunday afternoons, if you want to count that.

I believe that Hannity and Batchelor originate their shows from WABC. Warner and Bernie anchor their reports from the WABC studios for the Imus program. Noam Laden hosts an early-morning news hour at 5 a.m.

Larry Mendte says on a Facebook post "executives" were talking to him about taking over mornings. In his dreams. The crazy move would have been to bring back, a total failure, for a repeat stint.
Again, he is in disbelief they would pass on his great "talent" as a radio host. Heard he was egotistical and uncoachable. Wouldn't listen to any of the experienced radio broadcasters around him.
Why they'd want him back is beyond reason, and probably in his head.

I believe Mendte would have been worse. You have to feel bad for the IQ people who lost their jobs over all of this. While I liked Lionel at the start his attitude and voice did start to get annoying. Cutting back on traffic and other vital area information only made things worse. It almost sounds like they're just trying to run the station as cheaply as possible and then sell it. Too bad because I believed when they started IQ Radio that it had potential to be really good. Whoever is running things needs to think about another line of work.

Charles McCord also represented the 'voice of sanity' & the person to rope Imus back to reality on the show - I haven't heard the show since he retired but as I remember shows without him had no direction, sort of the same as Howard Stern shows when Robin Quivers was not there for some reason.

Larry Mente's reputation in this market was forever tarnished by his 'antics' on KYW-TV; most people would have trouble taking him seriously in discussing 'crime' or privacy issues.

What's was with the bizarre link of the IQ 106.9 morning show and Channel 11 in New York? Both Lionel and Larry Mendte both appeared on Ch 11 WPIX 10 o'clock news and did versions of IQ 106.9 morning show?

Randy Michaels. He was head of Tribune Media, when both were hired at channel 11, and then was fired and started Merlin Communications, which owns IQ.
