IMUS still sucks

He was never a rating wonder. He only had a good sales staff that convinced the world that he had the "best quality" audience. Every now and then the rating reality about hiom comes out. But they will still sell him as having a very 'desirable audience' and the torture will continue.

Don Imus may have a job, but he’s not exactly setting the world on fire.

The latest iteration of Imus in the Morning, which debuted on WABC-AM in December, was ranked 18th among men 25 to 54 years old, according to the winter survey from Arbitron.

You know, I am well within the 25-54 demo and a fan of talk radio as well. Not only that, but I actually listened to Imus (sometimes) when he was on WNNNNNBC back in the 1980s and enjoyed him then too.

All that being said, today's Imus is BORING! Absolutely unlistenable. It's sad but true.
 
I'm within the target demo, and I cannot listen to Imus! He drives me up the wall by being dull, dull, dull, while thinking to himself that he's compelling. His shelf life expired long ago, and I can't imagine what the top brass are smoking. The show is a complete disaster and if he hadn't been sharp in the past, he would have nothing going for him now at all.
 
... and lifting "live read" spots from Imus and putting them on the WABC Internet stream is not helpful. It sounds sloppy and unprofessional.


For example, the Callaway golf spot rolls through mumbles for 30 seconds ... and goes immediately into the first six words of the next "live" spot! Over and over and over again -- sometimes four or five times an hour. Whoever loaded that insert was doing sloppy work.

And the Professional Bull Riders spot is so old it's a tuneout.

The "live" Net Jet spots aren't bad, but to hear them without update or change after nearly two months really sounds poor execution for a big client.

Other Citadel stations running Imus to a lot better job and, in fact, almost seamless job of inserting "content" in the breaks. Surprised that the flagship station hasn't caught on.
 
In reading the Crain's story ... I can only think that Farid isn't laughing much, despite being told by the station;s PD, "I'm not worried about the numbers." Does this mean, as the story implies, that until PPM currency take place for real in New York, replacing diaries, that the Spring book, Arbitrends and the rolling averages and the Summer book, after years of widely criticized acceptance be something to be "not worried about," too?

That's going out on a limb.

Retooling and doing a major makeover of programming that dates back in the market nearly 40 years is something to worry about each day, especially in a sales demo that's not connecting, at least not now. Another makeover in order? Or, has the I-man's remake taken such an edge off that the past won't be reclaimed as hoped?

I'd keep the Tums and Maalox nearby ... and worry everyday.

is willing to consider/discuss +40 age demos
on a National Scale unless you are NPR.
 
Five million dollars a year for a 1.5 share. Nice work if you can get it. Bet Judy and Farid are ecstatic. Kuby's probably having a good laugh too... although at his own expense.

Imus was happier in the days of drinking and drugs, true. Also I don't think he is a morning person, this could explain a lot about many radio people now doing mornings (O&A). Add to this his contact with kids at the ranch and he could be picking up cold and flu germs. Now include some jet lag and chronic problems from his accident, you know he's human. I am happy he is hanging in there in spite of his being grouchy. Some people turn like that with age.
As far as the show is concerned, he made a good effort. The live reads are still better than the abrasive and annoying recorded commercials and sound effects, but I don't get the RFD-TV feed or use the web cast. I thought the numbers would pick up by now but it still may be too soon to know for sure.
 
Which begs the $5-million question:

Just HOW MUCH time do you give if you're $1.25 a share Citadel?

Dan Mason pulled the plug a lot quicker than four-and-a-half-months over at CBS on more than just the I-Man.
 
Imus was funny when they used to have to hang the microphone down on the floor so that he could do his morning show after drinking the prior night.
 
When the new book came out, Hinckley included the morning and afternoon numbers in his Daily News column. Imus is a full percentage point above his WFAN ratings. Not bad for a 67-year old.
 
Yea I had to laugh when I say Hinckley's attempt at putting Imus in a good light. It just shows you that what he writes about should always be taken with a grain of salt like most other writers. I have seen over the yeas a number of articles by him that were clearly written in a less than journalistic fashion. About all he has going for him in the radio department is that he is one of the few left who talks about radio so somehow in peoples mind that mkaes him an authority.

It's really apples-and-oranges. B&S do a different kind of show from Imus/O&A. What they do they do very well, though speaking personally, Sheri Lynch sets my teeth on edge...

That's right! I love their show, because of the "Eye Opener" segment and the "B&S Chatroom" in the third hour. They're much funnier, I listened to it on Catskill's WCTW "Lite-FM" every morning especially the podcast edition that I missed every morning before going to work. There was also a short promo at the end of the podcast edition of B&S for Candy & Potter. As I said, B&S is way better than Imus, because of the Rugters basketball game incident last year, but he's now at WABC and other Citadel stations. I don't listen to Imus too much, but I should stick with Bob & Sheri which is not happening in NYC except their show is on WCTW's "Lite-FM".
