IMUS SUSPENDED FOR TWO WEEKS ON MSNBC. WHAT ABOUT SEVERIN?

C

Casablanca

Guest
Just announced that MSNBC will suspend Imus in The Morning beginning April 16th for two weeks.

The program which airs here in Boston on 96.9 from 6A-9A will continue apparently.

Brings to mind the comments of one Jay Severin - also on WTKK 96.9 the afternoon of Governor Deval Patrick appearing on Egan & Braude for his monthly session called "Ask The Governor". Jay Severin proceeded to call it "AXE the Governor" as if Deval Patrick who is Milton Academy and Harvard educated had the misplaced diction and pronounciation some African-Americans exhibit with the word "ask" making is sound like "AXE".

In point of fact, Jay Severin's remarks were pointedly racists and yet the management on WTKK did nothing about it.

Why is there a double standard? If Don Imus goes down for a stupid and ignorant remark shouldn't Jay Severin go down for a remark which was specifically spoken by Severin to have a charged racial slur effect?

One would think so. Yet, the silence from Greater Media, Inc is deafening.

Severin has repeatedly refered to Mexicans as "wetbacks" and goes unchallenged... WTKKK is a nest of racist dullards from oreilly/graham/imus/severin..
There is not one talk show host of color on their station...They may as well be recording from a small town in south corolina....
a fla talk show host was fired for using the word "immigrant" yet severin has used this word for months countless times- never held accountable because this is what WTKKK is all about.. and sadly enuf boneheads support and listen to the twit..Sad commentary on Boston

I think it's hysterical that people who whine and grind their teeth over Severin et al don't simply turn the dial to lib-talk Air America instead. How hard can it be in a Liberal cesspool like Boston and Massachusetts to find radio these clowns DO like? Just find what you like, listen to it, and ZIP IT!

Oh. I know why. Must be because Air America is IN THE MORGUE!

WRKO's morning book will PROVE a precipitous falloff in listenership since Finneran took the reins of the morning drive there. If Lib-talk cannot succeed in Boston/Massachusetts, where can it? Proof that it can't (hasn't) is that people are spending energy on whining about radio they probably don't even listen to. I'd like a nickel for every 'expert' that hates Rush Limbaugh but are nowhere near a radio from noon to 3pm when he's on. Experts. Yeah. Right.

Well, I think it's hysterical that people who whine and grind their teeth over a Liberal cesspool like Boston and Massachusetts don't simply turn to the Northern New England board. How hard can it be? Just find what you like, read it, and ZIP IT! :D

Jimmy Myers sadly is BURIED on a sunday 3-6 timeslot....pathetic.. \
Just an idea.. why not take out Severin and stick him in the "sunday only" slot or better yet can his racist butt?

Hey Chris in COW HAMPSHIRE, enough of the pigheaded, fox news regurgitation. In fairness, Severin has nothing to do with the Imus situation, and the Imus situation ahs nothing to do with the constant "liberal vs. Conservative" drum that the right wingers constantly beat, NOTHING. Imus's arrogance and ignorance put him in this spot. Arrogance because he's Don Imus who thinks he's untouchable, ignorance because he claimed not to know how offensive what he said was. It is not about Air America, etc. Severin has a definate biggoted streak, no question. That is not a comment on his politics but his personality.

Learn to distinguis the two becuase the "Liberals his liberals that" crap blurs the issue. Enough of it.

I'm no fan of Imus, ever since he hoodwinked people into donating to his camp for underprivileged children in New Mexico. That was the worst of the worst, and I wish he'd dry up and go away for that extortion alone. On the other hand, Severin is the way he is for a reason. He sells. To his credit, when illegal crim-aliens come into this country and people turn a blind eye to it, and then these free-loaders commit heinous crimes, I APPLAUD anyone who stands up and rallies against that. What could POSSIBLY be your reason NOT to??? The sorriest people are those who exhaust themselves whining, 'Biggot!' and then pay no attention to victims--U.S. citizens--who have DIED at the hands of these crim-aliens in shootings, drunk-driving accidents, robberies...you name it. The sorriest people are those who want to coddle these crim-aliens ("ohhhh...poor them"). The sorriest people are those who refuse to recognize that these crim-aliens--besides coming here to try and take work away from U.S. citizens and drive wages lower--are net 'takers' from the system rather than net 'donors.' Yet these crim-aliens are treated like fragile eggs for god's sake.

Imus I dispise; Severin I agree with, although he pushes the edge just a bit.

Just wondering, but what makes you think that? Is there any evidence of listener fall-off?
Please be specific, because you wouldn't want to be accused of uninformed speculation.

<<< If Lib-talk cannot succeed in Boston/Massachusetts, where can it? >>>

Almost nowhere, mostly because they forgot that radio is entertainment, and there wasn't anything entertaining about non-stop Bush bashing after the first 15 minutes, If you can't be informative, at least try to be funny. Actually, one of few, perhaps the only, conspiracy theory that I buy into is that AAR was really a money wash for folks trying to get around campaign contribution limits to liberal pols. Since the AAR business plan made no sense, why else flush all that money down the drain? There must have been something in it for them.

I assume, from the context. that you put Finneran in the lib-talk box, which is strange when talking about someone who's entire political career was relentlessly opposed by a liberal establishment who nicknamed him Darth Vader. He was elected speaker of the Mass House despite overwhelming opposition from the liberal establishment, and most of his political and social views are probably the same as yours. David Brudnoy, a local conservative/libertarian icon, was to the left of Finneran on many social issues, and I don't see many people accusing him of being a 'liberal'.

.......Proof that it can't (hasn't) is that people are spending energy on whining about radio they probably don't even listen to. I'd like a nickel for every 'expert' that hates Rush Limbaugh but are nowhere near a radio from noon to 3pm when he's on. Experts. Yeah. Right......

Just wondering, again, but to which 'experts' are you refering ? I know of no radio professionals, media 'experts' who actually get paid for what they think, regardless of political stripe, who, love or hate his politics, think Limbaugh is anything but a talk radio genius who essentially invented the syndicated political talk genre, and whose influence is still being felt over 25 years later. Only Howard Stern is even in his ballpark. Most of the others, folks like Al Franken, Mike Savage, and Tom Hartmann will be the subjects of Trivial Pursuit questions in 25 years, as will Imus, but mostly because he'll have been dead for two decades.

I think you'll need a pretty small piggy bank for all those nickels you're expecting.

Regards,
TSB

Are you serious?!?!? I'm pretty damn sure that the "axe" you are referring to, has nothing to do with race at all, and infact I'm pretty damn sure that its in reference to "firing" Patrick, as in, releaving him of his office, as in the expression "what happened to jim why isn't he at work...oh he got the axe" I truly hope you were just joking when you tried to make this a race thing. My god people....wake up, you are ruining life for everyone else.

why are you pretty damn sure? did you hear it? do you have a recording? or are you just plucking an alternative interpretation out of thin air?

There has been plenty of discussion on this board about this incident, and there's been nothing to indicate that Casablanca misinterpreted the statements.

If you have the facts, I'm all ears.

No, I heard it. Jay said it right after Governor Patrick's first appearance on "Ask The Governor" with Egan & Braude in February.

I didn't make a tape. Never tape any show. Who does?

Wish Severin did not say it but he did and continued to say it for several days thereafter. Think management finally asked him to stop.

Um yes I did hear it, and um no i didn't make a recording, what would be the point in that? I just look at the facts, Jay never liked patrick, and he would love to see him "axed", and thats all he meant by it. If you are implying that Jay was making fun of the way some black rap artist say the word "axe", well guess what, white rappers use the word in the same way. axe is not a race thing, its a culture thing. done.
