"In Color" - Last Time Networks did this?

Inspired by the "Next on Most of These XXX Stations" thread, when was the last time a network or station in the US or Canada touted a program being in color? Up until around 1970, just about every color program on the networks and local stations were touted as being "in color", either in promos or in introductions before the show.

After 1970, NBC still used their Peacock, but not as often as before, and still used "in color" in their promos. By 1975, the NBC Peacock was relegated to Johnny Carson and "the Hollywood Squares", before leaving the airwaves altogether at the end of the year.

This should be the definitive answer:

"Police Squad!" on ABC in 1982 had the announcer (I forgot his name, but he was famous for the Quinn Martin shows, and came out of retirement) say on each episode "Police Squad! In Color!"

Of course this was a satire---but it counts!

cd

If we're counting satire, Keith Olbermann's been on a DuMont nostalgia kick the last few weeks, tagging his nightly tease for the multiple repeat broadcasts of his show with names of long-gone DuMont shows. A typical one - "DuMont Wrestling from the St. Nicholas Arena will not be seen tonight so we can bring you Countdown. It airs at 8 PM, 11 PM, 2 AM (etc.)....in color."

I suppose Tom Snyder's "fire up the colortini" when he was doing Late Late Show on CBS a few years back counts as at least an oblique reference, too.

I would have to say that ABC stopped saying "in color" was in 1972 with their intro bumper "NEXT!!!! THE FBI!!! in color!" . All network shows were in color by September 1966. The main reason why most networks still used "in color" until the early '70's was to promote color TV sets. It wasn't around 1972 when more than 50% of all TV homes had a color set. Once that happened, it was a moot point to say..... "in color". Now, stations are not promoting HD so much because most stations have HD facilities (network or local). Most sets are HD now as well. It's kind of like saying "Stereo 95" on an FM station because virtually everyone has Stereo now (even the 10 watters are in Stereo now).

But then again, for fun...... I still say "in Stereo" on my FM station! ;)

Along that same line, how long did the networks run a bug on the bottom of the screen at the beginning of a show in the 80's and possibly into the 90's saying "In stereo", and how long in the 2000's did they show a bug saying "In HD" (Possibly still even now on some shows?)?

drifting just a bit...but...anyone remember sponsors teasing shows they sponsored on another network?
I don't recall the sponsor...but remember a quick blurb along the lines of "be sure to watch Dobie Gillis...
presented by___on another network". Thought it was pretty odd even as a kid...
and the occasional flashes of local NYC IDs on the network were pretty cool...WNBC4 showed up most...
the occasional WCBS2 logo also made it.

That happened a lot, especially on Saturday mornings during kids programming. On WHDH-TV 5 in Boston, "The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Hour" always had a little blip of WCBS-TV Channel 2 ID showing up for just a second and then you heard the CBS "bong" just before the intro bumper for the "Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Hour". On NBC, the local WNBC-TV 4 ID would show up for two or three seconds on WBZ-TV 4 Boston or WJAR-TV 10 Providence.

The "In HD" still gets me, and it reminded me of the "In Color" when I first saw it. I would imagine they will still say "In HD" until we get rid of all analog TV sets. But with cable converting HD to analog, that will not happen very soon. I ofter wonder if someone still has a black and white TV set connected to a digital antenna or cable. I am sure it is still going on.

Related question - When did TV Guide replace that litle "Color" logo next to the show's title with the "BW" logo?

The first issue to have "BW" on all TVG editions was Aug. 26-Sept. 1, 1972.

Not sure what NBC's problem was, but these were (supposedly) clean network feeds coming
down the Telco line. I recall CBS had an intermittent glitch from time to time inside the
dairy barn where you could see a flash frame of the WCBS-TV ID if you were done with your
break and took the net early enough.

I recall that it is not just a simple change -- in that issue, TVG featured an "As We See It" editorial, which explains the change and why they're doing it, citing that most shows listed are now in color.

Fox still does this. Noticed it last night when "Terra Nova" came on after the Rangers/Tigers game ended.

local news that hasn't been in HD very long (WDAF), though the promos are often in SD

Indeed. I have that issue, myself.
