In-dash HD Radio declared DOA !

But HD Digital Radio Alliance president/CEO Peter Ferrara acknowledged what many in the terrestrial radio business have been complaining about recently: There are too few HD Radio receivers in automobiles, where most Americans listen to radio. Ferrara says it will be hard for broadcasters to wrestle carmakers' attention from the satcasters until there is more mainstream demand for HD receivers in cars.

And, for the first time this year, reports the Post, subscriptions for XM and Sirius are growing, through their partnerships with automakers including Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Toyota and Honda. Ferrara sees that as more of a threat to the widespread adoption of HD Radio. "If they [merge], they can control the dashboard," Ferrara tells the Post about the satellite companies. "They already have the partnerships. They could block us out."

According to the pro-HD geniouses, satelite radio is a dying medium with few subscribers if any, plus no one wants to pay $13.00 a month for the subscription and even if the subscription is free for 6 months no one renews it.

Why if after all the above are car makers installing a 'failing' satelite technology into all it's car models?

If satelite was such a failure why are they not installing HD radios into these cars for free? Ibiquity Greed?

I laugh each time I drive to the Florida area and they request the listeners to dump the current radios they are listening to in favor of HD radios.... what a joke!

I also got my first 'Doppler Effect' of HD radio on my way in, this was an HD FM station broadcasting out of Orlando and I was about 5-8 miles away, sounded like a 'warped' record or out of balance tape machine, the only reason I suspected something wrong is I have the same music on my Ipod and I listened to both just to make sure!

It's an amazing effect but one that will get the listener fatigued if listened for some time.

Because they get a commission every time someone subscribes.

There's nothing wrong with earning a commision for selling a product, especially if it's one requested by the customer, actually wouldn't an 'option' obtained on a vehicle be considered garnering a commission either for the dealership and or the salesperson?

When I got my daughter's Mazda last year, the satelite was already installed (Sirius + 6 months free activation) and it only cost me $300 for the radio, to me it was a bargain as it was factory installed on the dash perfectly in sync with the CD player and am/fm stereo.

The only option she wants now is the 'Ipod' attachment, so I have to get my tools out sometime soon! :D

Wow - I had no idea satellite was that pervasive. BMW would seem to be bucking the trend. If I were an IBOC advocate, I would be rather discouraged at the prospects for getting "in dash". But then I personally find the selection on satellite to be incredible - and I have to fork out for better TV each month, I have to fork out for internet access, I have to fork out for cell phone - you pay for what you get, if I want better radio I'll have to pay for it. The selection on HD locally sucks. Pride (gay) radio really sealed it for me - irrelevant formats I don't want to hear on a dozen stations vs. ten times that many on satellite. Sort of like the dozen or so over the air TV channels I can get with programming that sucks vs. 300 channels on cable - a dozen of which are actually watchable without hurling. I pay a lot more for cable, satellite radio sounds like a bargain in comparison.
