In house Townsquare Lafayette drama unfolding

Aircheckcollector

:'( Morale over here is at an all time low again. The GM is taking the sales staff to Las Vegas because they are doing well and evidentually hit their numbers. The PDs and airstaffs are extremely disappointed. We feel like we should be going too. The 107.9 PD known for anger management issues has been banging his head on his desk because he is so mad. He really does that too. The ratings are low at his station and spots are going for 20 dollars a pop. I can't blame him for the outrage. What does everyone on this board think about what's happening here? We all need some opinions so we can build a case for the GM. Are we being selfish?

Wow! Taking the sales staff to Vegas!
Sounds like you need a career change, from being on air to on the streets selling spots.
Go where the money goes and they are all going to Vegas.
Sounds like the head banging PD needs some attention...and serious meds.

I'm leaving the office for lunch and I am LIVID. I will post more later once my anger subsides :-[

I don't know what makes me angrier, the fact that a certain sales guy is rubbing it in our faces that they are going to Vegas or the GM walking around trying to make smalltalk due to the thickness in the air throughout the building. I am glad aircheckcollector brought this to light. So many of us here feel so over worked , under appreciated and stabbed in the back on a daily basis. the angry dude is so DAMN angry. why I Ask?

All I know is that this is rather $hitty. Why can't we go on a trip? We work hard too. Such a family like atmosphere. More like a bunch of Stepford wives. All those damn sales weasels so willing to stab you in the back at a moment's notice. "A" team my shiny metal a$$. Many of us are stuck with a fixed salary with no motivation to do more or less. Their entire paycheck is dependant upon how much or little they feel like selling that month. We get the same no matter how much work we do. Go to Vegas and I hope you get a sharp $5 chip that cuts you. All that and the slimiest of all sales weasels that used to be a jock is going around telling jocks he is going to take their jobs on air. Keep it classy, you know who you are. There is a reason why you have work for 3 different companies in the past year. You are the Randy Moss of Lafayette broadcasting. Oh and we may want to do a trade with Academy for Mr. Headbanger's Ball to get some bicycle helmets or some more sturdy desks via Office Depot.

The ones bringing in the money will always be the ones making the most money and getting the best perks - that's just a fact of life in all companies, not just radio. While it does seem like a slap in the face to everybody not in the sales dept, best to learn to live with the pecking order.

Voice tracking will solve all of your anger management issues.
Here's a bulletin for all you whiners:

NOTHING HAPPENS UNLESS SOMEONE SELLS SOMETHING!
no lights
no rent
no phones
no internet
no employees

The sales team has a hard enough job competing with the other radio groups in town, much less listening to you carping about a traded out trip.

By the way...you get a check no matter how the sales team performs during the month.
They get a commission for what they SELL.
A good month, more money...a bad month, not so much.

Voice tracking or syndication is a sure way to solve your anger problems about the sales dept.

This particular topic and thread is making me feel 20 years younger. Thank you! I say that because I left radio nearly 20 years ago and nothing has changed. The sales reps got all the moolah then, and still do now. How many GMs in the biz came up through programming versus sales? Of course I could have gone into sales at that time, but hell, thats not radio. May as well sell real estate, cars or microwave ovens. Now with current technology, its possible to run a 5 or 6 station cluster with just a few programming folks to cut the spots. Everything else, even local news, can now be outsourced. Hell if you wanted you could even outsource the production. Doesn't this remind you of the old WKRP episode from the late 1970s when Venus Flytrap visited an automated station with no one but the GM present? I am very sorry for you folks on the programming side. I certainly understand all the frustration.

:'( Yes, it does suck over here. The sales staff was at Ballys in Vegas all weekend while we are here voicetracking and doing the work of fulltimers even though a lot of us are parttime. I get that too. Why pay benefits if you can avoid it. CJ really lit a fire under a lot of us when he jumped on Shelley our promotions director for KTDY telling her she doesn't do enough to promote him. When Elton John was in the Cajundome he said congrats to the dome for 25 years. CJ jumped the promotions director because Elton didn't mention CJ. Of couse Grimsley won't do anything either. It's all so very sad. Grimsley, stop paying those visits to the shoe store in River Ranch and reprimand CJ. At least it will show that you care about your staff. I guess you can tell that morale is at a major low. We don't know what is going to happen to 105.1 though we hear things. 107.9 is aching as well. The PD is getting backstabbed on a daily basis by two of his employees but must have a plate in his head because he doesn't see it. Does this kind of hoo ha ha go on at other companies?

May I comment after 52 years as salesman, engineer, announcer, manager and owner of radio stations? If you cannot build a cohesive team at all levels, failure is certain. Backbiting and egos have no place...everyone needs to accept his responsibilites and compensation
like an adult. If they do not like it...depart....for your sanity and the good of the company. Amen....JBI

Judging from the previous poster, "CJ" needs some serious meds and shrink time.
The place sounds like a place you dont want to be and I would suggest to you that it wont get any better if the GM is not taking the helm in a way to benefit everyone onboard.
But...it's Louisiana radio. I am not really sure what the expectation should be.

Thank you all for bringing life back into this board!!!!!!! ;D Best thread in years!!!!

That's sad. Really sad. This board is dead. If this is exciting then tower heights must be orgasmic here.

No nothing new in radio..Same old same old in radio.. no family feuds going in radio around here anymore.. Since almost all of South Louisiana is corporate , people too worried about being figured out and hide sometimes

This board was decent back in the day. When they made it more respectable and forced people to identify themselves and re-register, the post count for Louisiana went way down.

A shame, really. Most of our groups/clusters have such few people working at them now, you would think we would all want to network to have a collective to bounce ideas off of. I suppose that is too out of the box, though.

As far as this thread, I think it is silly. They probably had a sales promotion that if they met a mark, they went on a trip. They made it and they go... Big deal. My feelings wouldn't be hurt if my sales team went on a vacation for selling ads on my station. Maybe I'm different. It is hard to program a station without a budget... Sales go up... Budgets come back. It makes sense to me.

Congrats to Chris Collins.
Now there's someone in broadcasting that gets it!
It is always about the money.
That has not changed in 50 years.

While unfortunate, this is a hell of a lot better reading than tower heights!

I dunno...tower height...forward power...resistance...kinda has an erotic tone to it. Back in my day...we had bumper stickers that said "FM jocks do it in stereo!"

All joking aside, Chris is probably right. The Vegas trip was more than likely a payoff to some goal they met. Do they at least give you programming guys pizza and beer when you have a good book?
