In Need Of Resource Info.

Good Evening!! In an earlier post, I made it known that I am wanting to change my career path from Programming to Sales, and am determined to do so no matter what. I have put together what I feel is a strong resume and cover letter package, and have sent them to stations that I have had good working relationships in the past, and am praying that something good will come out of it. But in the meantime, I am curious to know if there are any great resources I could be utilizing to find out more about Sales. I know someone had mentioned the RAB has great free resources, but are there others? Books? CDS? Blogs? Websites? I think you get the idea. I want to learn as much as I can about the business, and possibly find a mentor that can guide me through the learning process while I wait and pray that someone will see how determined I am to make it, and give me a chance. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Assuming I don't use the Draw, I could make it work. That is, of course, if the meaning of Draw as it was explained to me is correct. As it was explained to me, it is a "Loan" for expenses that I would have to repay with future commissions. Is that correct?

In sales, the customer builds a relationship with the salesperson. In fact, they
are buying the salesperson as well as the station because they like you. I have
hired salespeople who come with many accounts.
But, one thing for sure, you must have thick skin to be in sales. You will meet many
who will be downright mean to you. But, you must not give up. I've had some who
were rude and then they turned around and became my friend and a very loyal customer.
You can't hold grudges in business and that is difficult for many.

I'll help you. I've been in sales and sales management for most of my life. I started out in programming, but realized that the guys/gals in sales made a ton more money than us in programming.

There...I have "outed" myself:)

Thank you so much, John!! Any help, advice, etc. you can give me will be GREAT!! Is there anything you need from me?

Radio One hired the Indy Staff at 10% comission. A few had a 3k a month draw but most were past this.

After buying the properties and suckering staff into non compete agreements (with no compensation for same) they lowered comission to 5%.

25%???? Where?

I hate to admit it, but getting in the sales door is harder than I thought it would be. It's like trying to squeeze Rosie O'Donnell into an AMC Pacer. Maybe our good friend "radioho" was right in telling me not to even bother trying.

I don't know you at all so, please, don't think I'm flaming you or anything, just offering a few, genuine thoughts that come to mind here.

Do you REALLY want to sell?

If not, maybe it shows. If you really are only going toward Sales to close an income gap or just to cling to the industry you love, maybe you're somehow projecting that. It's back to "perception is reality." From what I read, I conclude that perhaps you give the impression of "just a board op" where you currently work. Remember, I'm not suggesting that's the limit of your talent and expertise; I'm suggesting that's how you're being viewed.

There are many descriptors that may or may not suit my presence on this board: fire-starter, troublemaker, troll, instigator, nay-sayer, cynic, skeptic, etc.

While I acknowledge I often wear the black hat by choice, I'm trying to not be that guy here.

I also don't presume to advise. However, it might be worth a deep analysis of what you truly love -- not just "radio" but what specific element within it -- and determining how to get that fulfilled, be it in this industry or another. Then pursue it with reckless abandon. That may mean the particular element has to be a hobby and not a career; I've read studies that say up to 90% are unsatisfied in their jobs.

I really do wish you luck.
