In Search of a 1kw solid state AM transmitter

The MW and SX series both use obsolete transistors & are maintenance headaches. I've heard some of the imported models (new) are cheap, maybe as low as $5K new). Buy two.

But you can get a new BE or Nautel for about the price of a new compact car (around 10 ~12K)

With NO tech support. Ever tried to call Florence Italy on a Sunday afternoon?

Install a Nautel Jazz for 10k and forget it exists until 20 years from now. Yes tech support is in Nova Scotia but they always are happy to help.

I have installed three of the J1000 rigs. On one installation, the owner cut corners by not getting the surge supressor. Mistake. However, I have had to call Nautel's tech support over this installation at 3 am, and always got a prompt callback. If you do go with the J1000, get the surge supressor. The two installs I have done with it have given me no problems.

I'm with the other guys - buy the Nautel J1000 with the surge supressor and forget about it. I've installed 3 of them and they have been the most reliable transmitters I've seen.

The owner that didn't get the surge supressor, finally wised up and I installed it for him last spring. I went from going down there once a month after a thunderstorm, to not going down there at all this summer.

Come to think of it, installing that thing for him has been bad for my business. :-\

Here, here! Quick delivery, good tech support, no problems since installing it (with the surge protector!). And the thing came via UPS in two small boxes. Whats not to love!

With all the room we saved moving the old RCA and CCA out, I was able to install a Jacuzzi and wet bar. Every first Tuesday of the month is Monte Carlo night with all proceeds going to Our Lady of Perpetual Sorrow orphanage and racquetball club.

Get thee a Nautel Jazz, feed it clean power and a 50J0 antenna load, keep it in a clean, well cooled building and reduce your blood pressure as an engineer and enjoy. Otherwise, get thee a BE AM1A and do the same. Both are your best buys in 1KW AM transmitters and are very well supported when you do need it.
