In search of sportscasters

Hello to all. I'm Jim Bleikamp. For awhile now, myself and some associates have been working on re-launching Brunswick's heritage AM station--WCME at 900 AM. The station will be on the air in the near future, and we'll be locally and community-oriented with a locally-based morning show, hourly local news throughout the day and more.

We'll also be very attentive to local sports--particularly to the high schools. I'm looking initially for a play-by-play football sportscaster and an analyst--I'm interested in both established play-by-play/analyst teams, if there are any around the midcoast, and individuals as well.

E-mail me at [email protected]. I will reply to all. I hope to get to know those here who I don't know already. Our plan is to do local radio with a commitment to Brunswick, Bath and the midcoast--in the way that it was done for so many years at the original WCME.

Hi Jim:

It's good to see community radio returning to the area. I love the intimacy of AM radio and wish you well. I grew up in Harpswell and got my 30+ year radio career start at Information Radio 900 (WKXA).

Are you going to try to do High School sports coverage with just 26 watts at night? Not being critical - just curious. Back in the 80s we had a pre and post (I think) sunrise authority of 250 watts. I think shortly after I left the station was granted overnight coverage but it was difficult to hear even in Downtown Brunswick because of the powerful Canadian station on the same frequency. Indeed sometimes WKXA had a problem with that station during the day - but we had a pretty crappy transmitter that needed frequent restarts and had me having to actually do something inside the cabinet of the transmitter. A pretty scary thing to do for a young non-engineer. I'm not sure I'd have the fortitude to do that now! I was Shawn Donovan in those days and did a one hour talk show - a pretty powerful experience for my first radio job. I was likely terrible but learned to talk for an hour because listeners rarely called (except when the local psychic was on when the switchboard went crazy). Later when the station went AC I did mornings. Dan Billings did sports (who I know hear is the Governor's chief legal council.)

Why the drop to 700 watts? I know you moved but that seems like a steep decline for a station that moved a couple of miles.

Psychics do very well on radio here(go figure!). When I bought WJTO, there was one here, and she had the best phone response of anyone on the station (which was a talk station at the time).

That tower by the river, after heightened to 460', was inefficient for AM-900, making its signal an under-performer. Mostly likely , with a new tower, designed for 900, the station will do much much better. 26 watts at night should certainly be enough to cover Brunswick well, even with the Hamilton Ontario blaster trying to get in..
