In the words of Pink Floyd ....

"Hello, is there anybody in there?" Really, is there anyone left? CC is cutting but not squat on the AL board. Arbitron numbers should be released soon. Revenues are hurting in many places. Magic got rid of the Dthn sales mng. Heard Ch4 (Dthn) doing the local news on 105.3 the other day and wondered what happened to the agreement they had to do the news on the Magic cluster (still doing it as well).

Stuff is happening and no one is posting. Too scared or is everyone gone?

BTW, don't know if Mont had a watch party for the inauguration but Dothan didn't. BIG missed opportunity. No, BO didn't win the Wiregrass but got a real chunk of the vote. Guess everyone is gone, at least the ones holding the clue bag anyway.

Additionally, hope the weather warms soon, it's been cold here on the Courthouse steps the last few nights......

Your lips move but I can't hear what you're sayin'.........

The truth is that I have such an iron fisted grip on the decreasing staff here
at Magic, that nothin' will make it to this board from MY employees.
Isn't that right Wendy?

I'm not in Alabama but my friends there say...

Clear Channel Birmingham.......

Eliminated All Programming staff in Tuscaloosa and Gadsden

Eliminated PD at The Vulcan in Birmingham

Eliminated Marketing Director in Birmingham

Eliminated 6 sales people in Birmingham

All Tuscaloosa and Gadsden programming to be originated in Birmingham.

Eliminated some folks in Montgomery too with some of those job duties shifted to Birmingham.

-----anyway that's the report I heard... is there anyone there who knows?

As far as I know Jimbo Woods is still there, well his bio page is still on the Vulcan's website. To be clear, I'm just a listener not an insider.

I don't listen to regular AM/FM radio in my market much anymore. I used to listen to Rick and Bubba until I finally got so sick and tired of them. The X is long gone, but my replacement The Rocket I liked better when Jimbo Woods was the PD there. It seems to me back then there wasn't so much Nickelback/Creed and '80s hair rock mix in the playlist, but I could be wrong. So other than hoping WYDE gets sold to someone who would actually do something worthwhile with the station's blowtorch signal, I just say quiet on the radio boards. Those are my reasons.

I made a typo in my previous post that I didn't catch at the time of posting and can't modified now. I meant to say, "I just stay quiet on the radio boards" not "say".

Sorry about that. ;D

Who owns WGMZ & WAAX? The FCC says...

"WGMZ 226 A FM 93.1 MHz LIC GLENCOE AL US BLH-19931027KA - 2465 1.65 kW 189. m CAPSTAR TX LIMITED PARTNERSHIP"

Score one for Whitfm.

And for what it's worth I saw a couple of their staff the day after the cuts and they said everybody in Gadsden kept their jobs.

I have become comfortably numb.

Is this the tip of the iceburg, or is the bloodletting over? (And this goes for all markets.)

"When I was a child I had a fever, my hands felt just like two balloons,", wait a minute.....fever hand nothing to do wi.....never mind. John, the tip was a could of years ago but this certainly won't be the end of the blood letting. Any company that is moderately to highly leveraged with debt is in deep do-do. What was the national company that owns the NY Times that agreed to pay that Slim fellow 14% interest for a loan, YESTERDAY? That tells you the faith and trust lenders have in media companies have right now, prime is next to nothing but in order to raise operating capital they had to agree to 14% money! What's the rate going to be this summer when the Fed has to start raising interest rates? No, the blood letting is going to be like a steady arterial flow for a long time, constantly pulsing and spewing employees and worthless paper everywhere.

Let's take it back a bit further in time, here Stewart:

"Big Man - Pig Man....HA HA! Charade you are!"

I hate being old and remembering applicable lyrics :-\

Hey Stewy, I trust you when it comes to financing "big radio". I have always managed to work for "mom & pop" stations. Even in market #7, it was four partners that didn't have any other stations in the area. So, you could say most of the stations I've worked for were "paid for" and operating on their own income. Are we returning to smaller companies that take a "local" interest in their stations?

Absolutely John, that's the way that I see it but there will be differences from the pre-consolidation days. I think the mom and pops will actually be mini clusters in a market and if successful operating in relatively close (not quite adjacent) markets with key employees from the home market doing the start-up/take-over for a piece of the pie.

Note to all who want to own their own, late this summer is the time to take the plunge. Follow the old rules of financing, 20% cash down but don't sink yourself to start with, say you find a station in a town (that you like) for 100K then you'll need more than just that, you'll also need about a years worth of operating capital (bills, salaries, equip to replace) so figure 250K..... that's what you'll need 20% of to get started (50K). Then go find a bank or individual(s) to finance the rest. You won't get rich but if you've on air skills and some sales and management skills then you can make a living for your family and your employees. Wealth is not the brass ring boys and girls. The brass ring is living in relative comfort in a good environment to raise a family and doing a good job of serving the community and getting the credibility that comes from doing so.

Many of us have moaned and groaned (rightly so) about what corp radio has done to the industry and all the heartache it has caused. There is always a silver lining to every dark cloud and I think this time it's that the industry has been buried so deeply that even jocks will soon be able to sit in the big seat (hey Shady) if they want. 50K isn't impossible to raise if you want.

If one or some of you do it, all that I ask is to remember how the idiots have run things and treated people and don't repeat their mistakes. Good luck!
